National Museum of the Air Force August 2013

Photos from our day trip to the Air Force Museum in Dayton Ohio on 8-30-13.
  1. WB50. It may look like a B-29, but its really a B-50 converted to serve as a flying weather station (and radiation detector).
  2. T38 sporting the OpFor aggressor paint scheme from Red Flag.
  3. P 40. Its got sharks teeth - what's not to love?
  4. P 39 depicted in an Arctic setting.
  5. The P-51 B with the closed hood canopy.
  6. A classic airframe. What's not to like about the P-26.
  7. The museum has an awesome example of a P-26. The paint job is superb.
  8. I always liked the OV-10 Bronco. Its a great looking airframe.
  9. FALCON Air-to Air missiles. The primary armament of the F102 and F106. The F106 was still using Falcon's when I saw them with the AF reserve at KI...
  10. F 84?
  11. This is one of the original F-16 used by the Thunderbirds. I remember when the Thunderbirds transitioned to the F-16 from the T-38. The Falcon was a...
  12. Look up yonder what do you see?

Big bad Phantom F4C.
  13. F101 Voodoo. You can see the Genie AAM missiles ready for launch.

Nuclear AAM. Draw all the damage cards in the deck until you get the explosion...
  14. I admire the clean lines of the F106. Its a great airframe that really captures 1960's design. The served as the only all-weather interceptor into...
  15. More F102
  16. F102
  17. Nice life sized diorama of NVA AA gunners shooting at...something.
  18. All that's missing is Tony Stark.
  19. C 17 Globemaster III. Possibly the most viewed C-17 in history. This plane has appeared in several movies including "Ironman" and "Ironman...
  20. C133 Globemaster. A few years ago, the museum had it configured so that you could walk up the open front ramp and see the interior cargo deck. But no...
  21. B 2. Its a stealth bomber. Pretend you don't see it.
  22. B58 Hustler - like the F106 this is one pretty airplane. The ejection pod is visible in the foreground.
  23. The BUFF - B-52. For such a large aircraft, it is surprisingly cramped on the inside. Crew comfort was definitely not one of the top design goals.
  24. Its an A-24. No, its a Dauntless.

Wait - its both!
  25. A6M2 Zero - painted up as part of the Zuiho's airgroup at the Battle of the Coral Sea. (what, were all the good aircraft carriers already taken?)
  26. The nose of B-24 Strawberry Bitch. How'd this get in here?
  27. A close up of the artwork present on the SPAD XIII propeller. I had to crop the original image and rotate it 180 degrees to get the text 'right side...
  28. The front end of the SPAD VII
  29. More SPAD VII pictures.
  30. Left side of the SPAD VII
  31. Right side of the SPAD VII
  32. The Museum's DR.1 hangs from the ceiling in an inverted position, giving a great view of the upper surfaces and the pilot.
  33. A duplicate?
  34. The DR.1 with trainer at lower left.
  35. Nieport 28. Another challenge for the photographer. While well lit the white cowling and dark background make balancing the lighting a bear.
  36. The Nieport 28.
  37. How'd t his get in here?
  38. Again?
  39. The JN-4 "Jenny" hangs from the roof of the museum.
  40. The museum has a JN-1 (in the foreground) as well as the JN-4.
  41. FT Douamont, after the "Verdun" campaign. I think those snazzy playing mats might be too pretty to capture the reality of the trench wars. For more...
  42. FKR DVII 002
  43. Another shot of the D VII showing off its boxy construction.
  44. Early Years entrance 001
  45. The entrance to the "Early Years" wing of the museum.
  46. Give the state of world affairs, maybe we should re-issue this leaflet?
  47. This DH4B is shown in its 1919 markings and is assigned to...Mexican border security???? Seriously, its painted in the markings of a squadron that...
  48. Another shot of the DH4B.
  49. A less than optimal shot of the Fokker D VII. The lighting in this part of the museum is less than optimal.
  50. A black and white photo from the museum display depicting the Caproni configured as a torpedo bomber.
  51. A shot of the Caproni's rear gunner position. On top of the rear engine with nothing but a wire basket between you and the spinning propellor. Oh,...
  52. M-M-M-My Caproni!
  53. The business end of the Camels twin Vickers.
  54. Camel guns 002
  55. Camel guns
  56. If you have Buttini's Ca. 3 from Wings of War, you may note that the bottom of the lower wing is painted red, white and green - the Italian colors....
  57. Another shot of the Ca. 33.
  58. Another shot of the Caproni.
  59. And the tail of the Ca. 33. This particular model is decorated to match the Italian plane flown by an American pilot during the war.
  60. A long shot showing the Ca. 33 bomber. The museum does a nice job showcasing how the Italians training a lot of US bomber pilots at Foggia in the...
  61. This is one of my favorite shots, mostly as it reminds me of a Wings of Glory balloon busting game we played. The Dr.1 is painted up to match Rahn's...
  62. A photo of an Army Air Corps Caproni bomber. This model has the Liberty engines.
  63. The crew of the observation below.
  64. Fokker D VII. Yes its a tailing shot, but its also the best image of the D VII I could get in the museum. The D VII is a bear to photograph due to...
  65. Overveiw showing the observation ballon with the JN-4 in the foreground with Rahn's DR.1 triplane inverted at lower right.
  66. Albatross!
