Dobbs Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Building ships from fir was a faster and less expensive method of producing a vessel. The downsides were a decrease in longevity and fir didn't have quite the resistance to cannonballs. I believe that the 40 Thieves 74's were fir-built, as were most of the vessels on Lake Ontario in the War of 1812. I've been pondering a house rule of reduced Burden for fir-built ships. For instance, a fir-built 74 would be a Burden 4. The Constitution museum in the Boston navy yard has a neat demonstration of the difference in strength between fir and oak. Quote
