Ouch, thats sad. Any reason given?

 

Last winter our Cold Wars con didn't happen because of lack of staffing. Happily it is being planned for Feb 2025. Its our only large con in the winter so last year was tough not having it.

Really missing Cancon and Wintercon.

Apparently Covid put the Canberra Games Society, that runs Cancon, in parlous financial straits.

It always was run on a shoestring. This year, a decision was made to try to partially refill the empty coffers by only having huxters and pay to enter tournaments. That meant extra room had to be made for these, and no money was available for free to play games, which require money to rent tables, chairs, playing boards and space in the pavilions, all of which cost.

In addition, many of those who have been volunteering their time and effort since the 70s are getting too long in the tooth to keep doing it. Some have been killed or crippled by the Pandemic too.

This is the first time in over 40 years that there will be no participation games.

Thanks for the explanation Zoe. And thank you so much for all your efforts over the years. I guess we are all getting on these days and in my case anyway there is no provision for my afternoon nap there so ....

Sorry to read this.

I hope there will be a return to some Participation Games in the future.
