Games will mostly be run on Saturdays between 9.30am and 2pm. These campaigns will eventually include all theatres of the war from 1936 to 1945 in which air forces opposed each other and enable players to fly as pilots of all the major (any many minor) combatant nations. During these campaigns players will pit their pilots against 'NPC' aircrew run by Campaign Moderators and other players, or against other player pilots flying their own campaign for the 'other side'. The aim of these campaigns is to increase the profile of Wings of Glory within the Brisbane miniature gaming community, to provide regular playing opportunities for existing Wings of Glory players and to attract new players to the game.

For simplicity's sake the campaign will use the latest Battle of Britain Starter Set basic, advanced and optional rules as appropriate for each campaign mission. There will also be a short 'campaign ruleset' addendum to deal with wounded pilots, damaged aircraft, bailing out, escaping enemy territory and other matters not covered by the official Ares products. This thread will collate the posted After Action Reports for each mission. It will also be used to post documents related to the campaigns to allow these resources to be used by players in other areas.

The first BrisWingsofGlory WGS Campaign follows the careers of pilots serving in the Polish Air Force from 1939 to 1945. Players start on 1 September 1939 defending Poland against the superior numbers and aircraft of the mighty Luftwaffe. Pilots who survive this baptism of fire will escape their doomed country and arrive in France where they can volunteer to fight as part of a 'Patrouille Polonaise' just in time against resist the German invaders. With the fall of France however the Polish airman retreat to the British Isles where they join the RAF. The Polish squadrons enter the fray as the Battle of Britain reaches a crescendo, taking every opportunity to punish the Luftwaffe for earlier defeats. The Polish pilots can later elect to serve with the Red Air Force on the Eastern Front, or continue to fly with the RAF attacking Fortress Europe, join 'Skalski's Circus' in North Africa and eventually take the fight to the Germans in the skies over France, Norway and into the Reich itself.

Later campaigns will allow players to fly with other air forces including the Luftwaffe (1936-1945), the RAF and other Commonwealth air forces (1939-1945), the French Armee del'Air and her Vichy or Free French forces (1939-1945), the USAAF (1941-1945), the USN (1941-1945), the Soviet VVS (1937-1945) and the Imperial Japanese Army or Navy Air Forces (1937-1945). Campaign documentation to support each campaign will be provided, including victory points, aircraft availability, ranks and promotion, medals and awards, ace skills, aircrew wounds and aircraft damage, replacement aircrew and aircraft, reinforcements and a luck point system.

I hope viewers will enjoy these campaigns as they unfold, and that they can provide some inspiration for your own Wings of Glory games.

Wings of Glory- WW2 'Pacific' -"Intercept the Kamikazes"

Wings of Glory- WW2 'Pacific' -"Intercept the Kamikazes"

It is late October 1944, A group of Japanese Kamikazes and escorts are sent to attack the landing and support ships off Luzon.
US Navy fighters are with their carriers chasing the Japanese carrier force so no US Navy or USMC birds are available to send to intercept them.
Fortunately the US Army Air Force just deployed a couple of squadrons of fighters, P-51s and P-47s to some carved out makeshift airfields on a small island near the Philipines. These are sent up to intercept the incoming attack before it reaches the transports and landing craft.
This is a last ditch attack by Japan with out-dated aircraft likewise launched from Islands near the Philipines.
This scenario is designed to show the disparity between early war and late war aircraft.

The Japanese attacking force comprises Six Mitsubishi A6M2 Riesen's (Zeroes), Three Aichi D3A1 Val's, and up to Three Kawasaki Ki-61 Hein's (Tony's).

Intercepting this force are up to 7 or 8 allied fighters, comprising of a mix of P-51 Mustangs and a lone P-47D from an Aussie Squadron that happened to land at the USAAF Airfield because he was low on petrol.

The Japanese Objective is to reach the US landing forces heading for Luzon. If the Japanese get at least two of the Vals off of the opposite edge of the map, or at least half of the starting A6M's off off of the opposite edge of the map. the Japanese win the scenario.

If the Japanese lose all but one or all of the Vals, and all of the A6M's. they lose the scenario.

The American Objective is to destroy all of the Japanese inbound Aircraft. Their primary targets are the Vals. Their secondary targets are the escorting Fighters.
(The Americans do not know that the A6M Zeros are actually Kamikazes as are the Vals.)
Any escorting Hein's (Tony's) are not Kamikazes but are strictly there for escorting purposes.

Latest AAR from our BoB campaign...

Latest AAR from our BoB campaign:

I intend to run this from 1937 (Sino-Japanese War) to mid 1943.

On 7[SUP]th[/SUP] July 1937, near the Lugouqiao Bridge (Marco Polo Bridge), outside Peking there was a border clash between the Japanese occupiers of Manchuria and the forces of the Kuomintang government, which soon escalated into full-scale war. The Japanese army (including air units) mobilised on 15[SUP]th[/SUP] July, on 28[SUP]th[/SUP] July Peking had fallen. On 30[SUP]th[/SUP] July Tientsin fell which was followed by Kalgan and other cities. So began the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Sino-Japanese War.

From the book of the same title this is an air campaign idea offering a rich choice of scenarios. Starting with the Sino-Japanese war and leading into the early Pacific War Campaign until mid 1943.

I think that I have already enough planes to make it happen.
It's a campaign with several flashbacks (when the planes are ready for it ;) ) that I will inter-ligate with the present. My pilot starts with 11 kills. He's an ace with two ace skills.

PO Nick Littlevalleys: You've been missing a lot... sir...

PO Nick Littlevalleys: Now that the fighters are scattered we could take those bombers...
Section Leader Dave Sailor: How many more rounds do you have?
PO Nick Littlevalleys: What?! Oh! Let's go home.

WAAF Louise Stone: Section Leader Dave Sailor, you're clear to go home.
Section Leader Dave Sailor: I hope that those bombers meet a tough squadron!

"What was the most awkward thing it ever happened to you during the Spanish Civil War, Joachim?" "Jean Rayneau, I think..." "What? Who was he?" "A French. A gentleman. A gifted pilot... An anarchist..." "Ah wait! This is too good..." "Kyte, boys! Come down here immediately. It's story time." "Ask them to bring the bottle." "And bring the bottle."

"Where you going to start without us, my boy?" "Never, Kyte." "So? What is it about today? France? Poland? Spain?" "It's about Spain, Kyte! He was telling me about this French anarchist." An anarchist?! One of those that set bombs in schools and train stations, my boy?!" "Ah Kyte. They are probably the most decent bunch, the anarchists. They were terribly betrayed during the Spanish Civil War." "But tell us about that Rayneau character, Joachim."

"After the Summer flying with the twelve group of the fifth Squadrilla de caza, we received reinforcements and pilots. Soviets. With them came an officer-commissar. He disapproved of my romance with Natalya. He was jealous. After a while I understood that I would fly no more in that squadron. As my comrades would take off I would see them disappear and then I would wander around the base and end in the mess. There I met Jean Rayneau. He, and several other pilots flown planes that were already obsolete. Yet, they would fly them with a sense of pride and honor that few were able to maintain. Jean came to me and asked me if I would join him in a patrol, since his wingman was sick with a fever. How could I say no?"

"The planes were Furies. A strange sense of beauty and betrayal filled me." Jean said, we're leaves in the wing blown by the politicians of the world. We can only do what's right. I asked him why the slogan in his plane. It's not a slogan, he said, it's not a slogan, it's a reminder for myself when I feel my resolve weakened. And we took of on that first of October 1937."

Chamberi was below us when we saw the Heinkels. Jean saw them and pointed them at me.

Three German biplanes. I was happy it weren't the new Messerschmidts monoplanes. Those were terrible. The only planes the Republic had that could match them were the Moscas and now I was grounded concerning the Soviets.

While I was still fighting to get the hang of the Fury I looked down to Chamberi. It seemed that there was something connecting me with that village. Then I looked carefully at the enemy planes trying to see their weaknesses.

I made a hand sign telling Jean that I would encircle them and he nod. We banked in different directions.

The Heinkels kept moving in our direction in a straight line. Good formation. Germans probably I thought.

Jean was a bit closer when the first sounds of machine guns filled the Spanish skies.

He immediately took damage.

And fired back without any visible result.

And then I got close.

We were both hit.

But we payed back in kind. The Heinkels were more robust, but the Furies were faster.

We were inferior in number and Jean put us in an inferior position. Or so it seemed to me at the time.

I took damage from two of the Heinkels in a quick sucession.

But I was able to hit something vital in one of them. Dark smoke start pouring from its engine.

Then we all crossed each other's paths and I could see the German uniform used by the pilots.

Everybody was maneuvering to get a good position.

For an instant we were able to break the German formation and we had but a moment to profit from it.

The Heinkel leaving a trail of smoke made the mistake to target Jean and I quickly put myself behind him.

I fired a quick burst, trying to economize my small amount of ammunition.

The German turned quickly right and Jean was covering my rear.

He fired a mighty burst against the German pilot that was trying to maneuver to my rear.

I hit squarely the engine of the Heinkel again and flames broke up from it.

The Heinkel 51 crashed near Chamberi.

We kept on circling, trying not to be in the crosshairs of the remaining German fighters.

And then I saw them disengage and retreating to their lines.

I signaled Jean, asking him if we should engage them.

He pointed our airfield. He meant us to go home. I nodded.

"You can always fly with us, Portugais." He said when we landed. "Congratulations with your kill. How many?" "It's my third one, Jean."

And that was the beginning of my time with the most amazing squadron I ever flown with. Both men and machines...

Special Considerations
This is a Solo Campaign - the enemy planes are to be played by the AI system.
This is a campaign based on patience - as night fighting always was.
The main concern is finding the enemy and then intercept and taking it down.

Historical (almost accurate) background

September 1943

Operation Cartwheel is in full steam. This defined allied offensive strategy in the South Pacific. The operation was aimed at isolating the major Japanese forward base at Rabaul and cutting its supply and communication lines. This prepared the way for Nimitz's island-hopping campaign towards Japan.
During the night, American bombers and fighters pound the important Rabaul airfield destroying planes and making it hard for the Japanese to fight as a cohesive force. Yet they kept fighting. A squadron of A6M5 zeros was painted black, their pilots kept in darkness during the afternoon to try to intercept the attacking forces.
They didn't use radars, only their eyes and the observers in the ground that would point them to their targets. The combat and night flight attrition was steep for this squadron. They were The Black Samurais.

Planes used

Japanese
A6M5 Zeros or A6M2 Zeros
The A6M2 uses the C+ deck (see the Banzai Deck created by Jan) or the C deck as it is if they prefer.
The A6M5 uses the A+ deck with a banzai card similar to the C+ deck - I hope someone can do this card soon. For those that prefer it they can use the C deck also as it was decided by the committee.

Americans
F4f Wildcats
P-40
F4U Corsair (convert into Wildcats if no Hellcat is under your belt)
F6F Hellcats (convert into Wildcats if no Hellcat is under your belt)
P-38 Lightning (convert into P-40's if no Hellcat is under your belt
B-25
B-17
SBD Dauntless
TBF Avenger
(Rules for Hellcats, Lightnings and Avengers can be found in the unofficial list)

Campaign Rules

1. Zone of interception
Take an A damage chit:
0 damage - Over the port of Rabaul
Numbered damage - Over the Airfield of Rabaul
Special damage - Over the Sea

Over the Port of Rabaul rules:
Observers and Searchlights
Ship and building targets

Over the Airfield of Rabaul rules:
Observers, Searchlights and Extra Plane
Planes and building targets

Over the Sea rules:
Bailing out in the sea

2. Intercepting
The Japanese player will have two zeros flying that must always be at different zones of interception. If they find themselves at the same zone of interception they might think that the other zero is an enemy.

The playing mat is divided in 4 zones. The zones further away from the target are the approaching zones. The zones over the target are the target zones.
The zeros can be placed i any of the target zones. The American planes are 4 counters that can be place in the edge of the approaching zones.

Over the Port of Rabaul:
There will be 4 targets over the port. Two ships and two buildings. The Americans will earn attrition points by destroying these targets.
Two of the targets must be in one port zone and the other two in the other port zone.
Observers and Searchlights will help the interception of the American planes.
Ship will be destroyed if they receive three points of damage. Destroyed ships grant 10 attrition points. Damaged ships grant 2 attrition points.
Building will be destroyed if they receive two points of damage. Destroyed buildings grant 4 attrition points.
The damage is done in a easy way. One point if they are hit by a card but not by the center of the card and two points of they are it by the the center of the card.

Over the Airfield of Rabaul rules:
There will be 6 targets over the airfield. Four planes and two buildings. The Americans will earn attrition points by destroying these targets.
Three of the targets must be in one airfield zone and the other three in the other airfield zone.
Observers and Searchlights will help the interception of the American planes.
Planes will be destroyed if they receive one points of damage. Destroyed planes grant 3 attrition points. For each destroyed plane take an A chit: Special damage means that a Black Zero was destroyed.
Building will be destroyed if they receive two points of damage. Destroyed buildings grant 4 attrition points.
The damage is done in a easy way. One point if they are hit by a card but not by the center of the card and two points of they are it by the the center of the card.
One Extra Plane can be deployed if one of the starting zeros is shot down or leaves the combat zone (it's not shot down, just retreated). Put the extra zero in one of the airfield zones at least one ruler away from the American planes or counter.

Over the Sea rules:
This means that the interception might be away from the American targets.
The American planes must fly to the other side of the playing mat. A second scenario can be played at the Japanese discretion. Take another A chit and refer to Zone of Interception above. The same planes will be used and they start all at the Approaching zones, the zeros one rulers away from the American planes and counters.
If a Japanese pilot has to bail out in the sea at night he will probably die. That's life... and death... Take a A chit. If a special damage is taken he was rescued.

3. Special Rules for the Campaign

Japanese Night Fighters and Pilots
These were special planes and pilots. They are all veterans specialized in night combat.
You have 6 planes and 6 pilots.
The planes can be replaced if after losing one you take an A damage chit and any chit is not a zero.
The pilots can be replaced after being wounded or killed if you take an A damage chit and the chit is a special damage. Otherwise your number of pilots is reduced by one. Tricky...

Observers
Observers will help you to find the American planes. Observers add one to the die at the "Visuals on the Target Plane Table"

Searchlights
Searchlight are white circles of 10cm (4 inches) radius that can move 5cm (2 inches) each turn before the American planes and counters are plotted.
There are 3 searchlights in the port, 2 in the airfield and none in the sea.
The american planes will always try to avoid them. If a plane is caught in the searchlights the Japanese fighter can add an A chit to it's firepower. If a American counter is caught in the searchlight is immediately converted.

Targets
As soon as the American counters or bombers are 2 rulers away from a target they will immediately fly in its direction to bomb it, even if they go through a searchlight. As soon as they drop the bombs they will turn and fly of the edge they entered. If they are escaping and at 2 or more rulers away from a fighter and outside a searchlight they "disappear".

Zones of Interception Rules
If two Zeros are in the same zone of interception they take an A damage chit. If any of them take a special damage that zero considers the other an American plane and has to intercept it and fire against it. This is overruled if that plane is already engaged with an American plane nearer than the other zero.

American counters
At each scenario the Americans start with 4 counters. The counters are fighter base sized and move per the I deck. The counters will be removed, keep flying or turned into planes as soon as a Zero is at 1 ruler distance from them or they get into a searchlight circle.

Visuals on the Target Plane Table

Roll 2D6:

3 or less - Not seen. Counter moves as usual next turn.
4-5 - Bogey. There's nothing here. Discard the counter.
6-8 - One fighter. Roll on fighter table or choose one American Fighter.
9-11 - One multi engine bomber or two single engine bombers.
12 - Two fighters. Roll on fighter table or choose an American Fighter. Both fighters should be of the same kind.

Fighter Table
Roll 1D6:
1 - F4f Wildcats
2 - P-40
3 - F4U Corsair (convert into Wildcats if no Hellcat is under your belt)
4-5 - F6F Hellcats (convert into Wildcats if no Hellcat is under your belt)
6 - P-38 Lightning (convert into P-40's if no Hellcat is under your belt)

Bomber Table
Roll 1D6:
1-2 - B-25
3 - B-17 (convert into B-25 if no B-17 is under your belt)
4-5 - SBD Dauntless
6 - TBF Avenger (convert into Dauntless if no Avenger is under your belt)

American AI Behaviour
Bomber will zig-zag towards their targets as per bombers automatic movement rules. They will try to avoid the searchlights.
Bomber gunner will only fire against close ranged targets.

Fighters will engage the zero as per normal AI rules. They will move away as soon as no bombers are in play.

A counter that reaches one ruler of a Japanese target will always convert immediately into a bomber. Roll on the bomber table.

Victory Conditions
The player will loose if:
Attrition ever reaches 50 points or;
All his pilots are out of action.

The player wins if:
Attrition reaches 0 points or;
After 10 scenarios he still has 3 pilots.

Attrition points:
Attrition starts at 25 points.
Ship destroyed - +10 att points
Ship damaged - +2 att points
Building destroyed - +4 att points
Parked Japanese plane destroyed - +3 att points
American fighter destroyed - -4 att points
American single engine bomber destroyed - -5 att points
American multi engine bomber destroyed - -7 att points
Scenario without Japanese targets destroyed - - 3 att points

4. Final Thoughts
I think that this is the ultimate solo campaign. More solo feeling than night fighters searching for bombers is impossible.
This campaign can easily be converted to other theaters of operation. Kyte was limping. His parachute jump had been a hard one. There were no smiles or laughter in the squadron meeting table. "All right boys. We're going for a different approach from now on." Everybody looked at everybody else. "Joachim and Andrzej have been picking my brain with a new approach and the top brass is willing to let us experiment on it." He pointed to the board. "We'll disassemble Green Section." Lee laughed. "What? Are you sending us home?" Kyte smiled coldly. "Joachim will go on from here." Joachim rose from his chair. "Thanks Squadron Leader." He pointed at the new list. Everybody could see their names in it.

"What is this story about elements?" asked Dave, a part of his head still covered with white bandages and pain spilling from his voice. His Spitfire went down spiraling and his head hit the cockpit before he was able to bail out. "From now on we'll fly in three Sections of four men and each man has a wingman to cover him. The section might split up, but the element of these two men will cover each other always." Dave nodded. "I see. You've done this in France, Joachim?" Andrzej laughed and replied first. "Unofficially." Joachim smiled. "A good wingman will help you return home safely." He looked at their faces and he could see them calculating the use of these changes . They need to be convinced, he thought. "The Germans know this. They are doing it since the Spanish Civil War." Realization sunk in. "Now! "So you say that you start fighting in the Spanish Civil War after taking goods for the Reds." "Not for the Reds, Dave. The Republic. Although it was a mixed lot..." "That lost them the war..." "That lost them the war?! Maybe the reason lies elsewhere, no?" "You said that you were flying a Dakota DC-3?" "Brand new, all markings erased." "Wait! I'll get the bottle and the boys..."

The plan was to reach the airfield near Madrid as night approached. Chances were that there was no Nationalist patrols. I almost did it.

Chamberi was below me. The airfield should be near.

I was looking left and right trying to spot enemy aircraft. The clouds were nearby and I would dive into one if I saw enemy planes.

Then I saw them. A pair of biplanes coming my direction. They could be Republicans, but with the load I was transporting, I couldn't take any risks.

I had to be quick or they would be over me in no time. I wasn't very familiar with the Dakota so I listened carefully to it's engines when I pushed them to the limits.

Now I was sure they were Nationalists. Italians.

If I could hide in the clouds and leave where they weren't expecting then I would be able to go to the next bank of clouds.

I looked back at them as I entered the clouds. My plan was to turn quickly and leave the cloud as they entered them.

I banked left immediately. I would leave the cloud as they entered it.

Inside the cloud I could see nothing. I was afraid to crash against the fighters so I dived a hundred feet.

And then I understood how slow these fighters were! I left the cloud and they saw me immediately. My only hope was to reach the next cloud before they took me down.

These fighters really turned well!

I turned into them, so I could have a little more space. They weren't much faster than my twin engine plane! That was a surprise.

But then they really made a tight turn and they were on my tail. The cloud was near but it might as well be on another continent...

My plane took some hits on the fuselage. In my mind I could see the crates of explosives I was carrying...

I was so near the cloud I could smell the humidity in the air. I was also about to smell lead.

I felt the bullets of the Italian fighter's machine guns raking my plane. The rudder jammed and I forced it to turn. But to no avail.

Then I was inside the cloud and save. Or so I thought.

In the midst of the white fog one of the fighters could still see me and fire. I couldn't take much more...

I banked right, hoping that they thought I would go straight or bank left away from them.

One of them could still see me. I could still hear the loud shriek of the machine guns.

If I couldn't loose them now I was done for it.

I felt the plane shaking with more bullets. That Italian had falcon eyes. I could see nothing!

And then silence. In the middle of the cloud I had lost them. But my plane was limping...

I left the second cloud and the sky was empty. The Italians were still on the cloud. I forced my bi-motor to go into the next cloud. That was my only salvation.

I was near the cloud and still no Italians.

They left the previous cloud the moment I was getting in the third cloud. My hands, my neck and my forehead were sweating.

They turned sharply in my direction but I was already inside the cloud.

I knew that the airfield was nearby. I hopped it has anti-aircraft guns.

I start descending to land and I saw the Italians moving away. Probably there were anti-aircraft guns after all.

Flaps not working. Landing gear not working. Perfect. Now I just needed to land a plane filled with weapons and explosives.

Scenario Rules

1) Joachim is a regular pilot.
2) Inside the cloud the fighters can only fire at close range.
3) Inside the cloud there are no bonus for shooting from the rear of the target plane or for continuous firing.
4) The fighters will proceed to the point were the transport plane entered the cloud.
5) Once inside the cloud the fighters will proceed straight, after randomly taking one of the three following cards: Straight / Left Turn / Right Turn.
6) The scenario ends when the transport plane reaches the other side of two maps or is shot down.

The Kindness of Strangers WW2 Solo Campaign: Prologue 4 - A Spanish Tale

May 29, 1940

"So, Joachim, is this your real name?" "Joaquim..." "Joaquim?" "Yes. Joaquim Ferreira." "So you are a Portuguese citizen?" "Yes." "Not a Polish?" "No." "So why this story about being a Polish?" "A draft RAF sergeant decided my nationality." "Really? Why?" "I don't know, Kyte... Probably..." Don't call me Kyte, call me David." "David Kyte?" "David John Kyte." "Okay David. I guess that me being Portuguese made that Sergeant nervous - Portugal being pro-German these days and all that." "I see. And with so many Polish pilots coming to the country..." "Yes. That must have weighted on his decision. I don't mind. I've been in Poland fighting." "And also in Spain, you said?" "Yes. That was the first time." "How did you end up there, old boy?" "I arrived there the 23rd February 1937. I was piloting a transport plane with weapons and explosives to help the Republicans. Do you want to see a photography?" "Oh yes! Indeed I want to." "Here..."

"So much dust!" "Well. Yes. I've never ate so much dust as in Spain." "And then you decided to stay there fighting?" "I've crashed landed the DC-3 and for some reason it didn't exploded..." "Not a good pilot at the time, eh?!" "Aaaah... Right. I had two CR-32's trying to blown me out of the skies. Having crashed landed was in itself a victory." "You have to tell me that story in detail." "Sure. But there's little to tell... The DC-3 became unserviceable. A British fighter pilot offered me a position in their International Squadron piloting a Polikarpov I-16. I accepted. There I met... The sirens!!" "Right! Let's go, Franciszek! We've got work to do."

But we haven't it all ready. So we go with what we have. Your section is mauled. Andrzej and Gus are wounded and you are feverish. You'll sit this one down." "I'll take my section and Yellow section. Green..." "They're still not combat ready..." "No. But they will soon if we keep losing planes and pilots like this..." "Good luck Kyte!" "We'll need it... We're entering the eye of the storm my boy..."

"Jawohl! The Spitfires were upon us as soon as we reached the mainland, Hauptmann Zirndorf. They always know where we are..." "Go on!"

"Those Spitfires... They are good..." "Our planes are better! Be more specific." "Jawohl Hauptmann Zirndorf. They came straight at us. Our fighters moved in to intercept. The British were on the fighters... It seemed that way in the beginning..."

"And that was all I was able to see... I know that our remaining Messerchmitt took another Spit and that they retreated after that... We lost four fighters and one bomber against three Spits..." "But you managed to complete your mission. It was a success!" "Was it?... I wonder... It seems that we're there to take down their fighters... But it seems the other way around..." "Don't question our superior's plans! All will go well. Soon we'll have RAF at their knees!"

"Westminster and Burmashave just landed, Joachim!" "And the others?" "Kyte was shot down but Eris saw him bail out. We calling all airfields to see if they know about him!" "And the others?" The rules of the Scenario
This scenario was specially created to be used in the Prague Summer CON.
It is part of my ongoing semi-solo The Kindness of Strangers Campaign.

The main goal of this scenario was to write a AAR for my ongoing campaign having my friends at the CON playing for my Squadron and the Germans.

Germans:
5 messerchmitts 109E (Two Veterans and Three Regulars)
2 Heinkels He 111H (Automatically moved)

British
5 Spitfires (One Ace Two Veterans and Two Regulars)

The Germans victory conditions are:
At least one of the Heinkel's survive to leave the map on the other side or three Spitfires are down.

The British victory conditions are:
Take down the Heinkel's and keep at least three Spitfires flying or leaving the map.

An outline will appear here before long and I am taking shameless advantage of other peoples' work.

But here is a challenge:

In gaming, the evenly-matched "dogfight", probably with fighters starting facing one another, is the most fun. In battle, avoiding the risky "even-up" situation was key to long-term success - striking by surprise if possible from superior positions, avoiding a "fair fight" like the plague!

But...it's no fun to "game out" a scenario where one side, with a serious altitude and positional disadvantage, mostly plays "victim"!

Suggestions for making scenarios instructional without making them boring butchery? It's my standard tutorial to have the first scenario be fighters jumping a few bombers who are basically on "autopilot" (or anyway, being controlled by me as a referee more than a player), to learn the basics. And that fits because early in the war the idea of the unescorted bomber hadn't been totally discredited yet..

One early lesson is going to reguire one side to attempt to maintain the prewar "vic" formations popular in many air forces, versus a free-flowing "Schwarm" of Germans (or Finns) - then re-fight the dogfight with more tactical freedom on the RAF or Russian side. Another might involve higher command requiring fighters to stick close to the bombers they're escorting (as higher commands tended to prefer) versus letting the fighters aggressively use best judgement (as every red-blooded fighter pilot preferred...)

Anyway, your collective wisdom solicited here.

Thread: The Kindness of Strangers WW2 Solo Campaign: Prologue 3 - A Fragile Start

February 22, 1937

“There’s not a great payment here to be collected, hermano.”
“I know. I’ll do it all the same.”
“The plane is sturdy… But you’re taking ammo and weapons for the Republicans and you don’t even know if they’re the right Republicans.”
“I know. I’ll take that risk.”
“And the fascists will come after you. That’s for sure.”
“That’s a given. I almost think that you don’t want me to fly this mission, Pablo.”
“You’re so young, Joaquim… I fear for you…”
“What kind of arms dealer are you, fearing for your courier?!”
“Yes… You’re right. I’m that kind of arms dealer.”
“I’ll be here tomorrow morning to fly that plane… A DC-3 you said?! State of the art.”
“Sure. I do hope that the adventure you’re embarking is worthwhile.”

We had four players, each controlling a group of three B-17s from the following Bomb Groups:

91st Bomb Group
100th Bomb Group
381st Bomb Group
390th Bomb Group

We played each of the scenarios through in sequence, with the following results.

91st Bomb Group

Th 91st group lost one B-17 to enemy fighters before reaching Berlin, a second aircraft received heavy damage during the same attack and left the formation as a straggler to try and return to the UK. The remaining aircraft reached Berlin and scored partial hits on the primary target, before returning safely to the UK. The lone straggler succumbed to its damage before reaching the Channel. The crew baled out and the aircraft crashed.

This group claimed 3 enemy fighters shot down during the mission.

100th Bomb Group

The "Bloody 100th" lived up to its name.

In the opening scenario one aircraft was engaged by no less than five enemy fighters over Haselunne, and although it was believed that the gunners shot down or damaged 3 enemy fighters, the B-17 was badly damaged and, with one engine on fire, it was forced to leave the formation. The aircraft subsequently crashed before reach the Channel.

In the same engagement a second B-17 was shot down, last seen falling out of formation trailing smoke and flames with a large part of the rudder missing. Again it was believed that the gunners had damaged several enemy fighters.

The remaining B-17 reached Berlin, where it came under heavy and accurate flak, receiving four hits during the run in to the target. The pilot was wounded by the flak, which also set the aircraft on fire.. The aircraft managed to release it bombs, scoring a direct hit on the primary target, only to be bracketed by flak a fifth time. The aircraft was last seen falling over Berlin trailing smoke and flames.

Note from the umpire: Despite the group's losses, it was the only group to score a direct hit on the target, and also shot down four Me109 and one FW190, claiming a further seven damaged or probables!

381st Bomb Group

The group was not attacked by enemy fighters during the flight to Berlin, but came under heavy and accurate Flak over the target. All three of its aircraft were hit, with one of the B-17s breaking up in mid-air after releasing its bombs due to a direct hit from flak. The remaining aircraft managed to return safely to England with the bomber stream but one had suffered extensive fire damage and was subsequently declared unserviceable. The group scored a partial hit on the primary target.

390th Bomb Group

As with the 381st BG, the 390th group was not engaged by enemy fighters during the flight to Berlin, but again came under heavy and accurate Flak over the target, with one bomber being lost to flak and fire during the run in to the target. The remaining two aircraft suffered some damage but managed partial hits on the primary target.

On the return flight the group was engaged by enemy fighters (including Me110s) but by this time the group was under the protection of USAAF fighters. Although the enemy fighters managed to inflict some damage on the bombers the American escorts managed to damage several Me109s and forced the others to break off their attacks. Due to the presence of the US fighters, the Me110s made no real effort to engage and broke off once it was apparent that the American fighters had the upper hand.

Summary

All of the Bomb Groups succeeded in hitting their primary targets, however only five of the 12 aircraft returned to the UK. Five were shot down during the mission, with two stragglers failing to reach the English Channel and crashing over France.

As a game, the campaign provided us with a number of exciting and realistic scenarios. The bomber players knew what they were trying to achieve and made every effort to get the bombers to their target. The rules covering the effect of damage to German aircraft worked well, forcing damaged German fighters to break off realistically instead of fighting to the death. This gave the bombers a chance.

However, it has to be said that most of the damage inflicted on the bombers during the aerial battles was the result of the massed head on attacks by the enemy fighters. If the players controlling the fighters timed their attack well, several fighters could engage one of the bombers and the results were frequently devastating.

The US escorts also played their part, shooting down several German fighters and damaging others, some of which could have been claimed as "probables", while also managing to prevent a number of the enemy from being able to close with the bombers.

So, overall and interesting campaign, which gave us a good insight into the daylight operations over central Europe during the big bomber raids. We will almost certainly play it again at a later date.

My only real disappointment was that the flak was probably a bit too effective, but we couldn't change the rules halfway through the game. I have updated the campaign Flak rules with two less "dangerous" alternative versions so those who try the game can choose which they prefer to use.

Details on how I developed the campaign can be found here:

"It seems that your rookie wasn't frightened by his adventure, Joachim..."
"Well Kyte... He will be... Soon, I'd say... Here he comes..."

"Well Cael... You're lucky... There's a patrol to be sent and you'll need some more hours of flight under your belt. You and Andrzej can do it."
"Yes sir! Thank you Squadron Leader Kyte!"
"Carry on!"
"Be careful out there, Cael! Follow Andrzej's indications..."
"Yes sir... aahh... Joachim..."

"I thought that Comm guys were less stiff, Joachim..."
"They are. Well... He'll get around..."
"If he survives."
"Don't say that, Kyte. You're the Squadron Leader. You must think and work for their survival. Even if they don't."
"You're right. Thanks Joachim..."

"Isn't this Joachim's plane, Flight Officer Andrzej?"
"Call me Andy. No! I've just painted a Polish flag in my bird too."
"Oh! You're both Polish?"
"In a matter of speaking Cael. In a matter of speaking..."
"Why are you laughing, Andy?"
"For no reason at all. But in fact you're right. I'll pilot Joachim's spit and a new pilot will pilot mine."

"You must be Gus. You can call me Andy and this fellow here is Cael."
Yes, sir. It's a pleasure to meet you."
"Well, let's go."
"Good, good, good."
"This is going to be an easy patrol, boy. Let's do this by the numbers and all will go well."
"Andy, what do you mean by the numbers?"
"I bloody hell don't know, Cael..."

Good, good, good! The airfield is clean, the ground crew seemed to know what they were doing and the pilots were in a good mood. I think that I landed in a good squadron. This Andy is an ace and Cael was at home in the cockpit of the Spit. Let's then do this by the numbers...

"Allez! Allez! Joachim prend Gaston avec toi et dépêches-toi! Les Boches attaquent! Stukas! Allez! Allez!" I signaled Gaston. A rookie. Confident. Too confident... He followed me quickly. We got inside the cockpit of the D.520s and helped by our mechanics we got ready to roll in the improvised airfield somewhere in North of France. "Suivez-moi. Ne me laisse, Gaston. Tu n'es pas prêt pour batailler sole les Boches." He laughed. "Ça, nous le savons aujourd'hui, n'est pas?" And I had a chill. I had no time to explain him that guts alone wouldn't bring him back home.

The radios in the Dewoitine were lousy. I could only hear half what Gaston said and I could only hope that he could hear me. I pointed at the incoming German planes. Three fighters, I supposed.

Gaston signaled me that he saw them and I tried to tell him again and again to keep in formation with me.

The D.520s were sweet to fly, but the One-oh-nines were faster and better armed. I knew that. He didn't know it yet.

Then I saw them better. Two Stukas protected by a One-oh-nine.

We moved in to intercept. If I could draw the Messerschmitt fire against me, Gaston would have a chance against the Stukas.

The German fighter faced us and targeted me.

And he hit me on my engine. Damn luck! I felt the engine losing power as I adjusted my sight.

We both fired back with a pitiful result.

Then we passed the One-oh-nine. "Mon moteur est endommagé!" I screamed. I don't know if Gaston heard me.

Then we fired against the second Stuka. The 20mm canons making a fast work on the dive bomber. And I wounded the German pilot.

My plane slowed down, its engine unable to cope with the damage. I turned right. "Je le finis!" I looked back and Gaston was reversing.

I had no time to dissuade him of it. Both Stuka's gunners aimed at me. The One-oh-nine was also reversing.

I had to destroy the other Stuka before he attacked whatever was his target. Gaston had to fend for himself. I shouted, "Le chasseur est sur votre dos!" but he didn't reply.

The Stuka's gunner hit me again.

He dove, I followed, looking quickly at Gaston. If I could put down this one quickly, I would still be able to help him.

The wounded Stuka trained his machine gun at Gaston's plane but failed to connect.

But then so did I.

I would not be able to stop the bomb run and the One-oh-nine was closing on Gaston. He would not reply to my warnings.

And then his rookie's luck changed.

As he was attacked by both planes. And now I could hear him well on my radio.

He was still capable of firing and hitting the wounded Stuka, breaking it apart. But I could hear him now. "Mon avion est en feu! Aidez-moi!"

I fired frantically against the diving Stuka.

I could see the Stuka falling and the D.520 with a trail of fire and a One-oh-nine on his tail. I was too far away...

Then the Stuka drop his bombs perfectly over its target, as I was told after...

And as I listened to my wingman screaming in fear and panic, I decided that this particular Stuka wouldn't bomb ever again.

"Saute! Saute, Gaston!" I shouted again and again through the radio.

The German fired with perfect aim at him. I kept shouting, almost mechanically. "Saute! Saute, Gaston!"

The Stuka's gunner was now getting nervous and failed to hit me.

As a divine retribution I set the Stuka on fire.

For a moment it seemed that an ironic reflection was upon us. Was the German fighter pilot also listening scared screams and impotent to help?

The fire kept devouring the Dewoitine. I could still hear his screams inside the cockpit.

Then the German pilot cut short his screams...

And Gaston went down in his burning winged coffin...

The Stuka was a sturdy machine and the fire seemed to make no damage to it.

The gunner was skilled and I felt his bullets raking my fighter.

But my aiming was good and finally I delivered an ail of destructive lead.

And as if still reflecting the events freshly past, no parachute opened in the skies of May as the Stuka burned down in its last dive.

I turned my nose to the German fighter still hungry for revenge, but the yellow nosed shark moved away.

"You can grab the bottle on the left closet."
"The bottle? There are several bottles here, sir."
"Don't sir me, now, Joachim. Just grab one of them."
"Okay. Glasses?"
"Somewhere in there there must be two or three of them reasonably clean. You did well today, Joachim."
"Thank you. You too."
"How was it there for you?"
"Where?"
"In France."
"Quick... Messy... Always losing... Always retreating."
"What planes did you flown?"
"They gave us their worst planes in before the Germans invaded."
"Gave you? You weren't alone?"
"No. I arrived in France with a Polish pilot. We were able to escape from Poland and we were debriefed and sent to a training squadron. But soon they decided that they needed us in a combat squadron. We were lucky enough to fly the D.520's."
"You seem sad."
"I lost several wingmen during those first days."
"The French didn't put much of a fight, did they?..."
"You're wrong, Kyte! They did put a fight! They're leaders were still living on the Great War..."
"I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings, old chap. Fill up our glasses, will you?"

"What were you doing before you became a pilot, Cael?" "I was working in communications, sir." "You don't have to sir me here, Cael... But you've requested a transfer for pilot training?" "No sir... aaah, Joachim..." "What? How come?" "I was sent to test my vision... I had some problems of... ah... headaches and the Medic Officer said I had excellent vision and that people like me were what the air force needed and soon I was in Pilot's School..." "God! I see... How many hours do you have?" "One hundred, Joachim..." "In Spitfires? That's good." "No... In total... In Spitfires I have twelve hours, including ground training..." "Good lord! I see..." "You'll be my second. Keep yourself glued onto me always. Always! And if you loose me in combat get straight back home." "Yes sir."

Stupid! Stupid! How stupid can one be? As soon as I heard the Squadron Leader saying "Bandits at ten o'clock level" I turned. And I lost Blue Leader. I almost panicked and quit and moved back home the way Joachim said I should do. Then I've heard Andrzej's voice. "Blue leader, Blue three is eager to engage. Should I cover for him?" My mouth was so dry I couldn't speak. "Blue two, You keep up with the squadron. I´ll bring Blue three back." "Roger, Blue leader. I'll attach myself to Red Section." And then I saw three of them coming at me.

"This is Blue leader. Blue three, acknowledge." My hands were trembling. "This is Blue three. Acknowledging." There was a pause. "I'm coming to you. Do you see bogeys?"

I almost laughed. I was feeling completely alone. "Yes, Blue leader. Three bogeys coming at me." My voice sounded much calmer than I felt. "Listen Cael. Try to evade them and then face them. Try to face them always, do you hear? I'm closing in on your position."

I almost asked him if I could dive and get back home... But I knew that he was coming... I've tried to remember what I have learned, but my head was empty.

The enemy fighters were coming in my direction. In my mind I could hear my instructor's words. "The first three minutes are critical. A rookie that can survive his first three minutes becomes a pilot." Right. When should I start counting?...

I´ll try to gain height advantage. "Blue three! What are you doing?!" "Trying to gain height advantage, Blue leader." He cursed. "No. No. No. No time for that! Evade them and then try to face them!"

"Yes sir!" Height still seemed key here. There they come. If I can't go up then I'm going down!

"That was a good idea, Blue three. But be careful. Don't overdive or your engine may stop." I know that! Everybody is speaking about that... "Yes, sir."

"You've done well! I'm almost there." Now... Turn right to face them. My hands are so sweaty...

What are they doing?! Ah! There he is. "I can see you Blue leader!" Why does he have a red nose if he's Blue leader?

"Here am I being fired against, yes. Keep turning right."

"You've hit him, sir!" Maybe he's as good as they say he is. "I've hit him in the tail... But that's not enough to get out of here in one piece, Blue three..."

"I've got two coming back at me, sir." I hear him laughing. "Not the best move on their part, Cael. Maybe they're rookies..." ..too. He doesn't say it, which is good in a way.

I looked back. They were coming at me. "They're on my tail, sir!" And his voice was now very comforting. "And I'm on their tail, Cael. Keep turning."

I felt my plane shake with the damage it took. He must have seen it. "How are you faring?" I sighed. "Took damage, but I'm fine, sir."

"I've hit one of them. He's turning away from you! You just have to worry about one of them now." As if that was a great consolation...

Joachim was able to take off one of them from my tail and the other one didn't turn as hard as I did. I searched for the third one and he was still far.

Maybe I could do something different now. Gain some altitude... Blue leader was too focused in his prey to direct me...

"You've made a half-loop?!" Did he have eyes in the back of his head?! "Yes, sir... To be able to face them, sir..."

He didn't reply, focused on taking down one Fritz...

The Fritz was in a bad spot, but the other two were coming back to get us. "Cover me, Blue three. But don't do anything too fancy." "Yes sir. There are two of them coming at us. Which one shall I attack?" "One of them!" Oh! How precise...

But he was precise... I almost couldn't take my eyes from him as he chased the one-oh-nine.

He hit him again and the plane shook and went down.

"Congratulations sir! Great sho..." He interrupted me. "Don't look at me. Look at the enemy fighters!"

I tried, but the plane going down mesmerized me for a few seconds...

Then I pushed the nose of my Spit up, trying to gain some advantage again while I saw Joachim completing a slip-S...

He was below me and I for once was above everyone. I looked up and behind me and felt proud that I checked that.

I fired against the incoming enemy fighter. "I've missed!" He laughed. "To be able to miss it is a privilege. It means that you are alive."

And then we got all close and friendly. "There's one coming at you, sir!"

"He missed!"

I laughed, a kind of manic state overtook me. "But you didn't!"

"They're escaping sir!" He laughed. "No they aren't. They're retreating and we will do the same."

"Squadron leader? Do you copy, squadron leader?" "Yes, Joachim?" "We're going back to base." "And the duckling?" "Doing well, Kyte!" "Take him home then..."

In This Scenario:

This was my friend Fenko first WGS game.
I asked her if she wanted to join me in a scenario for my campaign as I explained her the rules and gave her a rookie pilot.

We agreed (her suggestion) that I wouldn't explain her any rule during game. I could use the radio but only to give her orders as a pilot and section commander. Such a brave girl!
The scenario took its time but it was fun, fun, fun.

1. I'm using the Universal Diceless Solo WW2 Chart.
2. Pilot Officer Joachim Franciszek is an ace with 15 kills and 2 shared kills (4 kills and 2 shared kills official) (1 kill during this scenario) and the following 3 Ace abilities: Acrobatic pilot, Perfect Aim and Always Coming Back Home.

Historical info will be coming from http://www.battleofbritain1940.net/0021.html. Would appreciate any feedback - esp. ideas for improving, or ideas regarding aircraft substitutions or numerical adjustments. Sorry, I don't have a fancy .pdf to attach right now, but I hope to be able to develop a .pdf of the campaign eventually.

The three scenarios I have so far cover the action of July 10, 1940.

Scenario 1:

Germany on mission to recon 2 British airfields

Historical Note: From what I can tell, the bombers used for these recon missions must have been able to perform their recon without ever actually flying over their target. Therefore, to perform recon, German bomber needs to only get to halfway across board and must have target in cone of front FOV.

The units:

Actual numbers:

Britain - 3 Spitfires
Germany - 1 Dornier 17z bomber

No adjustment in force sizes needed, as 3-1 is very manageable.

German goal - recon 2 British airfields, return to base.
British goal - shoot down the German bomber, lose no more than 1 Spitfire

Scenario 2:

Germany on mission to recon a British convoy

The units:

   1 Dornier + 20 Bf109s (yes, 20)
   6 Spitfires
British ships in convoy (unknown number - historical account simply says, "large convoy", and I assume these were all ships that could not fire back - as there is no account of any German planes encountering fire from the convoy ships on the page I referenced.
   Reinf - 6 Spitfires
           - 12 Bf109s

Adjusted numbers
     - 4 Spitfires (2 @ start, 2 reinf))
     - 10 Bf109s (6 @ start, 4 reinf))

(I tried to drop it down to 2 and 5, but that makes sticking to the historical account very difficult).

After 1 Spitfire Damaged, it must head back to own side of board to exit safely
Other Spitfire on board @ start remains 10 turns (or until fuel is such that it MUST return home - if using fuel rules), then return to own side of board to exit.
When 2nd spitfire turns to leave, remaining 2 Spitfires and Bf109s arrive
Each time a Bf109 is damaged, it must turn back to exit own side of board (based off of comment in historical account that no Bf-109s were shot down, but yet they were 'stopped' by the Spitfires).

German goal - recon British convoy - bomber needs to have each British ship within sights at some point, then return to base
British goal - shoot down German bomber and damage 1/2 of all Bf109s. Bonus achievements if shoot any 109s down.

Scenario 3:

Germans on mission to attack the British convoy from Scenario 2

The units (this one looks like a 'Tim-scale' scenario :) )
     24 Dorniers
     30 Bf110s
     20 Bf109s
     18 Hurricanes
       6 Spitfires
British ships in convoy (Again, I Don't know how many there actually were)
     Reinf - 6 Spitfires

Adjustments
     - 4 Dornier 17s
     - 5 Bf 110s
     - 3 Bf 109s
     - 3 Hurricanes
     - 2 Spitfires (1 on board at start, 1 as reinforcement).

Historical note - the British planes were from 5 different squadrons at 5 different airfields. Due to this, the British player must space his planes out across his baseline at start and not bring them onto the board in groups.

German goals - sink 1/2 of ships in convoy, shoot down 60% of British planes.
British goals - Shoot down 2 Dorniers and any combination of 4 Bf110s/Bf109s, while preventing German player from achieving German goals.

Reinforcement Spitfire cannot enter the field until half of one side's goals have been achieved (historical account says last squadron showed up during "last stage" of battle.

For any scenario, of course, each side gets 1 pt for each plane either shot down or forced to leave battlefield (unless scenario description says the player is TRYING to exit the battlefield)

Assuming sepuku is forbidden him after his severe reprimand for losing his wingman what can I call him. I thought my favorite Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune. I search the net and found this list of actors useful for a squadron. the way I play I may need most of the names. ENJOY

For those who don't know sepuku is the ritual act of commiting suicide your second who is often a friend will cut of your head with 1 strike after you have cut your belly open. You may instruct him not to strike until you make perhaps two horizontal cuts. If your second gets it wrong he will probably feel he must commit sepuku. Note I said commit because I don't agree with it. a Japanese would probably say perform. Hari Kiri (hope spelling is ok) actually means belly cutting.
