Also trying to tie down the German presence at the battle.

which at the moment I have as 3x Fokker DII from KekE Kissenberth Hanstein Hilz

another 3 from Jasta 15 Udet Haber Pfalzer

6x Ago CI from FFA9b Killiani/Hartl + 5 unknown crews although I have found pictures of Agos from FFA9b around this time with 5 additional crews, although I can’t link them to the battle

There seems to have been 3 Rolands an unknown Aviatik and some Fokker and/or possibly Pfalz Eindeckers around too but no idea of numbers or units for these.

Most of the attention is given to aircraft that actually succeed in shooting down an allied aircraft.

I am trying to work out what aircraft participated in this battle and the question of what the French fighters did apart from Escadrille Lafayette which escorted BM130 is somewhat opaque.

According to Raymond Collishaw in his autobiography the French received 12 Strutters before the raid but then neither he nor anyone else mentions what they did with them and given the lack of supporting sources I wonder how accurate this is.

Another internet source mentions one fighter being loaned from the RNAS for the raid and given that Red squadron A Flight only had one fighter instead of two this may be possible

Another internet source says one fighter and eight bombers were permanently transferred although doesn’t say when and if this was all at once. I think this may have been much as some listed were 5xxx aircraft which arrived later.

I have also seen mention of a random collection of aircraft from other Nieuport squadrons being involved. But unsure if they flew with the Americans or were assigned to escort the two Farman squadrons which otherwise seem to have been unprotected with the possible exception of any Strutters loaned or otherwise.

	Good day all!

It’s a little late in the day for this topic, and for that I apologize, however I thought I’d share aviation and/or WWI- related events that happened on a particular day.

(these dates/events are sources from my Ghosts Aviation WWI calendar referenced in this thread)

So starting out, ON FEBRUARY 11th…

	- In 1909, an important pioneer in New Zealand aviation, Vivian C. Walsh pilots a Howard-Wright biplane on what is generally considered the first flight in New Zealand by a powered airplane. (it should be noted I also found several conflicting dates, with Wiki saying the 5th, but the reference listing it as the 9th, and other sites mentioning the 11th)

	- In 1914, the distance record for balloons over land is set by Hans Berliner, flying 1,890 miles from Bitterfeldt, Germany, to Kirgischano, Russia. (again, a bit of a conflict on the actual dates as you can see by the reference)

Here's a paper clipping my sister found while doing volunteer work for the Durham co. library in North Carolina. They interview Oliver Colin LeBoutillier, an American who volunteered for the Canadian flying corps. He was in the dogfight when MvR was shot down. The interview took place in 1970.

The first clip from the ‘Glimpses Into the Past’ YouTube channel shows remastered and colorized footage of French naval officer and pilot Jacques Trolley de Prévaux flying over the Belgian coastline to Verdun in 1919, with a camera attached to his craft a few months after the armistice to record the devastation:

The second clip is from the same channel, showing the crash site and wreckage of several Zeppelins shot down over France on October 19th, 1917:

Absolutely amazing, and definitely gave me some ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ vibes.

This was triggered by a visit yesterday to our local rural life museum where I perused the second hand book stall. Difficult to fault £1 books!

I have dipped into it but so far difficult to say what I think. There’s quite a bit of anecdotal stuff and I think there may be interesting bits to mine but I doubt it is a long term resident of my bookshelf. I will know more when I have read the book from cover to cover.
I was doing some research the other day (*glances at username* 😉) and came across this (relatively) old article from 1982 in the U.S. Naval Institute, written by a Midshipman Michael F. Belcher. Although the article spans the history of Marine Corps enlisted pilots all the way to the end of the NAP program in 1973, it's got some fascinating WWI roots, and I thought it'd be a great article to share:
The Flying Sergeants
The formatting absolutely bothers me, but other than that it's a great look into the history of aviators of the enlisted variety!

I’ve got a couple of Be-2c (Shapeways and Danger Close) as well as a Paint & Glue version [and a Shapeways Be-2e but that’s another story]. I’ve got some Miscmini Be-2c decals and serials from 13 Sqn R.F.C. - researching these 12 serials, 3 were lost in the last 3 months of 1915, 4 in 1916 and 5 in the first four months of 1917. I’m aiming to have one Be-2c in CDL and one in PC10 but I don’t know when PC10 began to be applied to 13 Sqn machines.

Incidentally, Ronny Bar’s profiles British Two-seaters of the Great War p.23-33 show 18 Be-2c (4 RNAS). Two of these R.F.C. machines are captioned as being of 13 Sqn at Savy July 1916 in CDL - no.s 2535 and 4076 [to add a wrinkle summarised movement summaries (if right) indicate that 2535 only arrived in August 1916 and was not a 13 Sqn machine - maybe meant to be 2635 which was a 13 Sqn machine wrecked 17 July 1916?]. According to movement summaries 4076 was lost on 21 July 1916 ‘Pancaked into corn to avoid somersault’ landing from an artillery patrol.

I’ve identified about 51 Be-2c which movement summaries indicate were allocated to 13 Sq in France (obviously there could be errors/gaps). One (4084) is recorded as ‘hit cow on t/o’ 🙂. As far as I can tell Be-2c disappear from 13 Sqn by May 1917 by attrition, as other Be-2 variants take their place.

Does anyone know/guess if by April 1917 some 13 Sqn Be-2c might have been in PC10 upper surfaces?

As a result of an OTT AAR I became interested in when the SE.5a first saw action. Google and various fora state that the SE.5a entered squadron service on the Western Front in June 1917 and that only 56 SE.5 (as opposed to SE.5a) were produced. The main difference from a layman’s perspective seems to be the 150hp Hispano Suiza engine of the SE.5 vs the 200hp Hispano Suiza/Viper of the SE.5a. [There are indications that there are additional complexities around the Wolseley version of the 150hp but I think these date from later 1917 and would all be SE.5a]

A bit of digging into RFC movement returns that have been summarised/collected (caveat as to data quality) indicates that almost all the aircraft received from the UK in June 1917 were 150hp Hispano Suiza powered (so SE.5). Exceptions to the end of June seem to be 200hp (so presumably SE.5a) serial A8923 (issued to 56 Sqn 5 June, back to 1AD 20 June and then back to 56 Sqn 27 July - presumably repaired?), A4563 (issued to 56 Sqn 11 June, a wreck by 24 September), A8925 which seems to have been flown back to England from depot on/around 21 June and not issued to a squadron after it arrived from England on 4 June. A4855 is a curious beast. It is recorded as a 150hp SE.5 overturning on landing on 5 May 1917 with 56 Sqn, by 1 June is on charge at 2AD - but by 12 June is transferred to 1AD as a 200hp SE.5a - flown to England on 21 June (probably as part of the transfer of 56 Sqn to guard England) it reappears in 56 Sqn being wrecked on 20 July when its propeller came off.

Going through 56 Sqn establishment in June almost all are 150hp machines (except A8923 and A8925). A number of 200hp machines were issued to 56 Sqn in July onwards. Interestingly a lot of wrecked 56 Sqn 150hp machines seem to have been repaired/reconstructed as 200hp machines over summer/autumn 1917.

So what does this mean? In June 1917 almost every machine in action seems to be an SE.5 not an SE.5a.
I have heard multiple times the rumour about pilots... overusing the latrines due to inhalation of fumes and residues of Castor Oil used as lubricants in plane engines during the Great War.

Invariably, this factoid is accompanied by the mith of big amounts of alcohol drunk by pilots as a countermeasure to the Castor Oil effects, something that to my knowledge is physiologically inaccurate as alcohol would possibly make things worse!

I was hoping to learn more about WWI Pilot Domenico Arcidiacono (his name is on one of the new Macchi M.5s). What I know so far is that he flew for 259a Squadriglia and the 261a Squadriglia. He flew under Magaldi and then took over after Magaldi. He had a motto painted on his plane which many Italian pilots used: I casi sono due (There are only two.) It's part of a monologue from Italian actor Petrolini which said something like (roughly translated) "War breaks out, there are two possibilities: either you are able or will re-form. If you re-form, you care, if you are clever, there are two options: either remain in rear or they send you to the front ..."

I'm interested to know if anyone knows of Domenico's origins (geographic or familial), or other service history beyond what is on Ares site.

Last time I tried to do this you jokers got into the weeds about "my case is better, no MY case is better," so let me stress we are NOT discussing Product but only PROCESS. Not WHAT you put 'em in but HOW you sort 'em and assign spaces.

I've been working for three days now on this table, though I've carved off the Middle East into its own front. (Admittedly, Ostfront and ME could probably fit into a single 12-pack between 'em, but... frankly I expect that it will be a VERY long time before we see anything Russian, be it Imperial or Commie, and the Ottoman war just doesn't have the same "star power" as the colorful cast of characters that made up the Western Front air war.) Can anyone help narrow down the dates and theaters each mini represents?

Note: The original Red Baron tripe with white fields around the Iron Crosses is incorrect for 425/17, but it MAY fit an older Dr.I that MvR gave to Stappenhorst with the instruction to add some markings of his own for ID. (He added a "checkerboard" band behind the cockpit.)

I have tried to make this HUGE table as accessible as I can. Thinking about making each year a separate table... Anyone out there willing to help with better matching pilots/decoes to dates? Yes, Barker and B6313 appear twice because man and machine were transferred between fronts together. At first I wanted to do "everything available on this date," but ended up switching to "new introductions only" for brevity. (Known issue, need to check availability dates on all Americans, and Kissenberth Camel is best-guess.)

Brandenburg G.I

I belong to a Facebook group called Luftstreitkräfte / K.u.K Luftfahrtruppen / RFC / SPA 1914/18. Based on a list of victories (mostly aces claims) on the Macedonian Front, it allows you to filter by aircraft type or pilot name. The idea is that it will:

a) be of historical interest

b) help people to create plausible or historical scenarios

https://sites.google.com/view/ww1-macedonian-front-air-war

How to use

Use the checkboxes to select one or more aircraft types or type a pilot name/partial name. The list will show historical actions matching your entry. Scroll down to see the entries on a map (where the location is known). The map is a bit dodgy - don't zoom or pan, it will mess up the locations...

Data

This is only as good as the data, and the data is (as usual) not very good. There are a number of British claims of Siemens Schuckert D.III, which almost certainly never flew in Macedonia. Likewise there were claims mentioning Friedrichshafen bombers, which probably were actually the AEGs of Kaghol 1. Locations are also difficult, since the place name have changed since the war. Gaps in the data cause problems - e.g. we know that Hanriot HD1s flew on this front in Italian 73a and 85a but I can't find any victory or loss data, so they don't show up in the list. I still have French data to add, but there is reasonable amount of German/British data.

Background of the Macedonian Front

The Macedonian Front had a diversity of nationalities and aircraft types not seen on any other front. A multinational force composed of French, Italian, British, Serbian and Greek troops faced off against Austro-Hungarian, German and Bulgarian forces along a 250 mile long front stretching from the Adriatic Sea in the West to the Aegean Sea in the East, traversing mountainous territory and inland lakes between.

In terms of aircraft, the Entente started out at a distinct disadvantage, flying obsolete types against a relatively well-equipped enemy. As time went on more advanced types arrived and tipped the balance against the Central Powers.

In the West, the Italians flew a squadron (34a) of pre-war Farmans conducting reconnaissance in the southern tip of Albania, escorted by some old Nieuports (sq 85a). They faced the Austrian Aviatik and later Albatros D.III (Oeffag) fighters of FLIK 6. Caproni Ca 3 bombers also saw some action in this sector.

In the centre of the line French and Franco-Serbian Escadrilles flew ancient Voisin and Farman aircraft. These were gradually supported by new arrivals of Nieuport and SPAD VII fighters, as well as Dorand ARs and Breguet 14s. Italian and British squadrons also appeared in this sector later in the war, fielding Hanriot HD1, SE5a and Sopwith Camel fighters. They faced off against German Jasta 25 and 38, starting with Halberstadt D.II/III and Albatros D.IIIs to protect their DFW and LVG 2 seaters, with Albatros D.V and a small number of Fokker D.VIIs arriving later in the conflict. A squadron (Kaghol 1) of AEG bombers spent a brief period at the eastern end of this sector in 1917, raiding British and French camps and aerodromes.

At the eastern end of the lines the British flew Farmans and B.E.2s at the start of the war. Later on B.E.12 fighters, deemed unfit for the Western Front, were sent here. The obsolete types were easy pickings for German ace Rudolf von Eschwege, who flew a Fokker E and later an Albatros D.III for FA30, supporting the two Bulgarian Aeroplane sections in this area.

The front saw balloon busting, photographic reconnaissance, artillery spotting, bombing and dogfights, producing a number of aces on both sides.

BBC Voices of the First World War. "In the Air: Bloody April"

I'm sure many have come across this segment but it was new to me and thought there may be others who would enjoy it.
