Looking for a tip or two for painting propellers and struts. The Vallejo "Wood" is a bit dark for what I'm looking for. Adding White won't give me what I want. Would adding a touch of Yellow lighten it up to make a (better!) Wood colour?

I have the Ares Roy Brown Camel, (Green) the Collishaw Triplane and McCudden SE5a (both brown) and wondered what the logic was as both as chronology or service don’t make sense and so am left with a squadron difference or an Ares error?

The five colors are usually described as a dark green, a light green, a chestnut brown, a beige, and black. Plus underside light yellow, though sometimes a light blue was used in place of the underside yellow. The followup posts will cover each of these five colors, except for black and the underside colors, which are (or will be) covered elsewhere. As always, there was quite a bit of variance in the colors and even in the patterns. SPAD sent out patterns for their planes, but it was still up to each manufacturer to modify and adapt the sketches to their production machines.

In 1968-1972 there were a set of scholarly articles published in Cross&Cockade (US) called "Project Butterfly" by A.D. Toelle, H.D. Hastings, and B.F. Hardesty that researched the 5-color paints and schemes in detail¹. I consider it the standard when it comes to this subject, and it is still used by museums today. Their choices for the five colors were Methuen 3F5/3F6, 3E5, 4C4/4C5/4D5, 5E3, and 4D3 for Dark Green, Light Green, Beige, Brown, and underside Light Yellow respectively. The authors acknowledge that there is little contrast between the dark green and brown and between the light green and beige. On fabric surfaces, aluminum powder was mixed into the paints to protect against fading in the sun, and this gave the paints a somewhat glossy or eggshell luster. Aluminum powder was not used in the paints (of the same colors) used on metal surfaces.

The usual caveats: As always, there was frequently variation in paint color, weathering, varnishing, etc., so this is just a general guide. Unless you've got a high-end, wide-gamut monitor in perfect calibration (and who does?), do not trust the colors you see on your monitor! Instead, visit your local paint store and see if you can find paint samples like the ones listed below and then match your hobby paints or mixes against those. The goal is just to "get close". See 'Color: why we'll never get it exactly right'.

Entries with an asterisk (*) are excellent matches; entries with question marks (?) have not been formally measured with a color meter and are therefore unconfirmed; hobby paints with tildes (~) are just very rough matches...the best we can do without a custom color mix.

Where you see "WD" below, it lists the Windsock Datafile that references that particular shade. C&C is for Cross & Cockade; Davilla is for French Aircraft of the First World War, p.575.

Do you know of a book or site where I could find information to paint 2 or 3 other Jasta 37 Albatros?
I would like to repaint this captured Nieuport, included in the Watch your Back expansion, but I couldn't find images or descriptions to know how to paint the rest of the plane. Only a picture that shows the crosses in both underwings.
Also, the card is of a Nieuport 11, but in the articles I found talk about a Nieuport 16. Hello!

I purchased a set of decals from Aviation Wing with marks for 8 Fokkres Dr.I from different pilots. Some of them have the Iron Crosses and some the Balkenkreuz.

In the case of Ltn. Eberhardt Mohnicke it includes the Iron Cross. In most pictures and sources I found, it is always displayed with the Balkenkreuz. I only found one picture with the Iron Cross.

Are both good because he changed one for the other keeping the rest of the marks and colours the same, maybe?

Thank you!
However, as I understand it, that unit was the exception and on the whole, the Fliegertruppen/Luftstreitkräfte did not send complete units to this theatre of the war, instead supplying aircraft and instructors to their Turkish allies, except perhaps FAA030 - is that correct?

Having recently ordered an "Aerial Desert" game mat from Deep Cut, to be collected at Colours in September, I was wondering if there were any on-line sources of colour schemes for RFC/RAF squadrons in the above theatres, particularly No.1 Squadron Australian Flying Corps (ditto for the Turks, and their German allies/instructors)? It seems odd that all the sources I can find suggest that the same colours were used as for the Western Front, with perhaps PC10 being more common than PC12.

Also, could someone just remind me of the nearest Foundry/Vallejo colours to PC12 and PC10.

Thanks all!!!

Question about WoG banner, flag, poster?

Question friends!

Okay so I want to start a local Wings of Glory club here in the USA, so local people can come together twice a month and play Wings of Glory! My kids are gonna help and I’m trying to drum up some interest locally to make it a regular thing just purely for fun!

There are a lot of different gamers that play at this game store here in town and some of them have really nice flags, banners, and posters of their specific games they display while playing!

My hope was to find a Wings of Glory banner, flag, or poster I can display while we are playing! It might sound a little silly but I gotta tell you it’s impressive seeing some of the other guys WH4K and Star Wars posters and banners and flags. I’m jealous! Hahaha

Basically ARE THERE any Wings of glory banners, flags, or posters? If not, can anyone help me design just one for display when we are playing?

Thank you all!

It was very easy and it would be a great first conversion for someone to try.

I started by buying 5 Albatros D.III Gruber. They are available on the Aerodrome.

Great plane but I do not like the wing edge and edge of the tail that are yellow. I started by painting over these using Vallejo 099 Ger. Ext. Dark Green and 084 Uniform Green mixed 50/50. This covered a multitude of sins.

To paint over the decal on the wooed I used Vallejo 125 Desert Yellow. It was a perfect match and when I hit it with a gloss coat it blended in perfectly.

For decal I went to Miscmini and ordered their Albatross D.III FLIK.41J 1/144 Scale Decals. They are gorgeous.

These went on with very little effort.

The one good thing is if you don't have a Brumowski and don't want to pay what they are going for on PayPal you can paint one of the Grubers red and use the Brumowski decals on the sheet.

Lastly I hit them with a coat of Lusterless Flat Lacquer Clear Coat Testors to finish them off.

I think the results speak for themselves.
