Default New: 69th Fighter Squadron RAF

Hello everyone. Fairly new here but can't wait to fight in a campaign. Right now I have a fictional Squadron in the works. The 69th Fighter Squadron RAF. They are a squadron made up entirely of Irishmen. I got about 15 pilots right now and names will be placed here as soon as I get back on Monday. But I have made the squadron's Badge and also the markings for their planes. I do not mind any feedback. The Squadron Badge is my profile icon. I will show it on here soon as I figure out how to do so.

No doubt inspired by New York's Irish Brigade...

Yes. It is indeed inspired by the Irish Brigade.

Well the motif of the squadron on their planes is a shamrock with 69th in the middle. Written in gold.

The real 69 squadron RAF has an interesting history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._69_Squadron_RAF

Interesting. I never knew that. But I do have the squadron markings as IE and they have a shamrock with 69 written in gold. A roster will be coming soon.

I just saw that that movie was coming out and I definitely would love to watch it. I may consider that a nickname of the squadron. We'll see once things get organized.

Doesn't look like the RAF used a squadron code IE, so that's a good choice.
The real 69 squadron used codes MJ & WI it seems. The second code used when 613 sqn was renumbered to 69 sqn in august '45, the first 69 sqn having been disbanded.

Yeah. But I must say with squadron codes, though I have an understanding, I still get confused. I also must ask about Squadron roundels. How and when were they used?

Think you're referring top the colourful squadron marking used during peacetime between the wars and after. Probably not something you need to worry about for your wartime 69 sqn, Brian.

Nice job, Brian, but if you want to sell it as RAF the surround should be light blue, the scroll gold, the middle field white and the title Squadron. All capitals

There is a special reason that I did it this way. Since this is the only Irish Squadron in the RAF, they have their surround emblem green. I shall update the letters fixed though.

Highly unlikely but it's your show.

It is unlikely but I do want this to be unique. And changing the colors for them would make it unique.

At long last here it is. The roster of my squadron. Listed by Rank, Name, Age, and Place of Birth/Residence. We still have yet to place each one in it's respected flight.

Squadron Leader: Major Jack Strider. Age 21. Dublin, Ireland.
Flight Lieutenant: Captain Fergus Donnelly. Age 30. Cork, Ireland.
Flight Lieutenant: Captain Seamus Finnigan. Age 19. Dublin, Ireland.
Flight Lieutenant: Captain Rory Fitzpatrick. Age 21. Kilkenny, Ireland.
Flight Lieutenant: Captain Cillian O'Sullivan. Age 22. Belfast, Ireland.
Flying Officer: 1st Lieutenant Liam McCafferty. Age 19. Waterford, Ireland.
Flying Officer: 1st Lieutenant Braeden Quinn. Age 23. Galway, Ireland.
Flying Officer: 1st Lieutenant Caolan O'Rourke. Age 18. Sligo, Ireland.
Flying Officer: 1st Lieutenant Darragh McAllister. Age 29. Wexford, Ireland.
Flying Officer: 1st Lieutenant Cormac Connelly. Age 25. Derry, Ireland.
Flying Officer: 1st Lieutenant Conor Murphy. Age 25. Tralee, Ireland.
Pilot Officer: 2nd Lieutenant Eamon Sullivan. Age 23. Limerick, Ireland.
Pilot Officer: 2nd Lieutenant Ronan O'Reilly. Age 18. Galway, Ireland.
Pilot Officer: 2nd Lieutenant Cian O'Malley. Age 28. Limerick, Ireland.
Pilot Officer: 2nd Lieutenant Kilian O'Malley. Age 19. Limerick, Ireland.

These new pilots can't wait to get out into the fight. But still await their spitfires. They are criticized at home and by other RAF Squadrons.

This reminds me of what my friends and I did way back. We were flying Fighter Ace and we created a virtual 455 SQN RAAF. That squadron was to my knowledge unique in operating from Russia. In their mighty Hampdens they were the ultimate deterrent against the escaping of the Tirpitz. Fortunately for them that never happened. We were contacted at one point by the author of the book about them, Geoffrey Raebel. Interesting factual story of those Aussies.

Huh. I never knew that you Aussies had a squadron in the Soviet Union. Thanks for that interesting story.

If I may ask, is it good that the squadron has 15 planes and pilots? And also should there be flight Sergeants?

  23. #23

    Default

The squadron tried to keep 12 machines operational when they could and supposedly had 16 on strength, if lucky, to maintain that where they could.
Pilots were in short supply so a dozen to start with and you'll have some replacements handy when the inevitable happens; Flight sergeant pilots were in the mix to cope with the shortage.

So with my Squadron it is a brand new one and would probably be full? Good to know. Now I need to get 15 planes, paint them, and then my Squadron will be ready for the fight. I must ask though if these lads go into battle, how would they get decorations or medals? What would be the criteria?

Well, I am going to make paper models with this site: https://www.4dpaperairplane.com/supe...-spitfire.html but I think they are going to be bigger than 1/200. But this is just until I can buy 15 spitfires. Also will have to make maneuver cards somehow.
