Default OTT EYM - Mission #10-12 March, 1917 - der Feldluftschiffer in Flandern - by malachi

Wilhelm Schnecke fiddled with the controls of the Roland. It was sturdy enough, but the forward view was limited, and it seemed less maneuverable than his trusty Albatros. The order had been to take up the pair of Rolands and combine the outing with balloon protection – likely to be an uneventful and pleasant flight this far behind the lines. Wilhelm noted the gorgeous crystal-clear day and how far one could see on the flat horizon!

To his left, Max Brennen signaled to the west. Schnecke saw them almost immediately, a ragtag group of Belgian scouts up to no good. So much for that quiet, relaxing patrol.

The artillery showed they were on alert today and immediately found the range on the nearest scout.

As they closed, Schnecke could see the Nieuport 16 laden with rockets undeterred in its course heading directly for the drachen. A Sopwith Pup lay dead ahead but he turned to challenge the N16 hoping to disrupt its intentions as bullets whizzed all around. Brennen had the same idea as the two traded shots at long range.

Schnecke fires but doesn’t notice any effect on the N16. Vanhoutte prepares to unleash both groups of rockets at close range as the terrified observers bail out.

Vanhoutte’s rockets immediately set the beast ablaze as Schnecke misses again. The artillery focus on Wouters’ aluminum Nieuport as the N16 is too close to the balloon but come up empty. Brennen’s Roland begins to smoke taking damage from Wouters but he punishes the Pup as the Spandau's jam.

It takes no time at all and the fire engulfs the drachen which explodes in a ball of flame. It takes its revenge on its killer and Schnecke feels the Roland quake from the shock wave.

Very well laid out AAR with great pictures of the action and some lovely planes and a superbly painted Drachen. Nice to see the Rolands out on the table.

Well done to the 'plucky Belge' for getting the sausage but they had some bad luck with the card gods. The good news is that all the pilots survived and will be back in action soon.

Another sausage downed, those rockets are proving quite successful ! Well played game with a shed load of action and some natty pilot tags

A tough mission trying to protect a balloon, those Belgians had the better of it today but none of them got home and we will have another balloon in the air tomorrow, I'm sure. Next time we must get to them before they can launch their cursed rockets and save our comrades the bother. Now, I believe we have Wilhelm's victory to celebrate !

Ltn Wilhelm Schnecke is awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class on attaining his third victory for the Kaiser and Fatherland

    Hi Chris,

Nice map and nice to see the rolling hills in the background, which blend well. The Roland’s did their best but one volley of those rockets did for the balloon, flames and gas are not a good mix. Nicely painted Drachen as always and nice to see a pair of ‘Haifisch’ working to protect and see off those Belgian Nieuports.

The AAA over-performed, which was a relief. Schnecke would have traded all his ammo for any special damage on the first two shots at the rocket plane. 'Twas not to be.
The name tags are just chunks of foam board with a slit on one side and a tiny 2 x 1mm magnet glued on the other.
Glad you got my 'flatlander horizon' joke, Baz
Thanks for the kind words and REP, all!

Some lovely models, Chris, which makes it good to read regardless of who wins. In this case pretty much a Pyrrhic victory for the Entente.

Rep must wait for a bit.

Yes, made me chuckle at the beginning. Pipe cleaner rockets look good too.

No waffling by the Belgians, they struck hard and fast, but all went down for their efforts.
Luckily for them they will all get to return to the fray.

Nice backdrop - looks much more appropriate than those mountains in your previous AAR.
As others have said , your models look great (gonna use one of your drachens in mine this week ) and the rocket effect was spectacular - might have to try that ...
Ingenious little name tags as well.
All in all a great presentation.

Too bad about the sausage ....

Short, sharp and very brutal. That AA gun was at it again - bally thing was pretty accurate once more. The eagles may have lost their balloon but it was definitely at one hell of a heavy price, with a clean sweep against the Belgians. Still, everybody survived, so perhaps they will yet make it back to their barn for celebrations. Well done to the Eagles for doing a magnificent job - not their fault the rockets did so much damage

    Cheers Chris Rep inbound.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. The balloon and rocket plane were doomed from the start, this being their first scenario The AA broke that rule, but perhaps that only is valid for flying thingies.

The Belgians got their job done quickly downing your balloon. At least the balloon got some revenge and downed it's killer. AA did a fine job of it's own too. They didn't leave many Belgians flying for you to shoot down!
