Default Flight Club 10/'23 at Entoyment, Poole

After a summer full of wind and rain, the ninth meeting of Flight Club is set to go ahead on Sunday 15th October 2023 at Entoyment Poole for yet more WGF, and possibly WGS, mayhem

The usual crowd have already been notified but if you're a forum member that wants to come and join the fun then get your name down & let me know via PM if you want attend.
This is not an Entoyment event ie you cannot book a place to play via the shop. I will manage the table - Cost to cover the tables will be three quid a head on the day to be paid to flash on arrival please.

This is not a demo/participation like we'd usually put on at an event but a day for us to get into some more involved gaming and play some bigger, longer, WW1 scenario type games than we may usually get at a show.

I will update an idea of content nearer the time but, as they usually go down well, there will be one hour dogfights in the mix and maybe an opportunity to fly something you don't have or don't use too often.

If anyone has a scenario they'd like to put on for this event please PM me.

L-R: Mike (Mikeemagnus), Tim (Flying Helmut), Gary (Hu Rhu), Rich, Iain (chianti Raider), Baz (Baz), Hobz (Yellow Peril), Andy (Sherlochnumber1), Ajay (Ajay), Rob (Rabscallion)

If you'd like to see what you're in for here are the previous events:

Gary has confirmed he will do a WW2 Pacific scenario for us.
Looking for a WW1 scenario now and suggestions for the two 1 hour WW1 dogfight games.

We're pretty much going to have a full house this time out.
We have a WW2 scenario & a WGF scenario, just a couple of 1 hour dogfights to add to the mix now, so if there are any suggestions / ideas let me know via PM

Clock is running down on this event, just pulling the models & ideas together so hope everyone can still make it, should be another classic.
We practiced WW2 pacific last Wednesday night. It could be brutal methinks, make sure you have your dinghy & paddle close to hand !

Been off the Grid for a few days, so I've missed a lot!

Yes, I will be attending Flight Club on Sunday (if all goes well).

If anyone wants any stuff from "The Shop", please PM me BEFORE SATURDAY NIGHT! (Grrrrr - you know who you are!) and I'll do my best to bring stuff along.
I laugh in the face of danger - then I hide until it goes away!

Received three late 'real life getting in the way' cancellations since Friday so we're down to a round dozen if the rest can make it in.

Well, after another late loss we ended up with 11 players on the day - that didn't dampen the enthusiasm; the chaps were on fine form and much fun and banter ensued.
Many thanks to all who could attend; big thanks to Gary for taking us out to the Pacific and his patience teaching us the basics of WW2 (oceans eleven ?) and a thanks for Mike, who didn't make it, for his scenario suggestion which we all enjoyed. Thanks too to Tim for bringing 'the shop' and shooting most of us down, some of us twice !
Thanks all for making Flight Club what it is, it would not be what it is without your continued support and input.

    Pics will follow idc

Ramming speed ! I turn into my attackers clipping Tim's Pfalz and narrowly avoid Andy's Fokker - they shoot up Hobz's N.11 that is just behind me. Gary rips in to Sean's N.16 'F' in the background

With the sands of time running out Tim has the last word by dropping Hobz's N.11

Frankly we were surprised there were only four downed in an hour, we put it down to the random start placings. It was a fun game to kick off with.

"Banger's & Crash" WW1 Scenario inspired by one of Baz - Gullyraker's - OTT scenarios where opposing sides are both tasked with knocking down an opponents balloon whilst defending their own, some are loaded with incendiaries and can only shoot B at planes. There are also B gun AAMG but they only come into play in the last 15 minutes of the game. Camels v Pfalz D.IIIa

Size: 212.4 KB
A couple of turns into the game, British sausage in the foreground, German Bratwurst in the background. Due to the disparity in speed the Pfalz started in line with the front of their balloon, the Camels started in line with the rear of theirs. Ajay in the Barker Camel doubles back to protect his balloon, it's hard to see but Baz, in the yellow tailed Pfalz, does the same for his.

Closing reasonably fast first rounds are exchanged, Andy in the Ares Holtzem in the foreground, Tim in the Nexus Holtzem beside him carries incendiaries, Me alongside in Hohn with the same loadout. Pete's Camel #3, leads a charmed life as two of us jammed exchanging fire, luckily I'm overlapped by Sean's Hearts Camel.

Size: 214.8 KB
Then we break through the British line, with one more to beat. Concern is raised as Andy sweeps toward us !
In the background Stuart, in the green tailed Pfalz having timed his Immel to perfection has latched onto Hobz's tail and is already making life pretty miserable for him.

There's a sigh of relief as Andy threads the needle between me and Tim. In spite of his protestations of innocence, if you flew with him regularly you'd know why we were nervous !

The Brits close in on the Bratty ! Hobz gets of a long range burst into it (0), even as Stu hits him again with another +1 and Baz roars in guns blazing even though he has the Hearts Camel and Gary's #8 Camel on his case at long range.

Hobz did get in a close range shot too (1GJ&0 +1) but the attention was all too much for him - nicely softened up by Stu, Baz chopped him down from close range in spite of still taking rounds himself. The bottom row are the +1's Kill to Baz

Meanwhile at the other end, I closed on the sausage. Having taken some heavy hits and cleared my jam I made my run in and opened up at long range (4) all set to close and run along the side of the balloon strafing it at close range but Ajay had other ideas whipping round in tight right turns to hack me from the sky with a BOOM card. Tim has jammed shooting up Pete's Camel #3.
    Kill to Ajay !

Random placement start positions diced for again.
Quick explanation - we use two points 2.5 rulers apart nominated odds and evens. A part of the table is nominated 12 o'clock. Roll a D6 to see which point you're based around. Roll a D12 to see which direction from the point you are to set up. Roll a D4 to determine how many half rulers away from the point you start. Roll another D12 to set the facing of your plane. Once you get the hang of it and by rolling all the dice at once it doesn't take too long to set up. Use a single point when there are fewer players. All machines are assumed to have been flying turns or side slips, so no immediate Immels are permitted. It seems to work quite well and beats the head-on rush.

    Great pics, Dave.

Having played with and against Tim at Origins last June I know what you were up against.

Especially interested in that carrier battle.
Amazed the Devastators managed to do anything.

Still waiting for Ares to give us the PTO stuff they promised ages ago.
Might have to bite the bullet and get some of Mike's (mikejr74) or AIM Kates and Avengers ...

The carrier model looks great BTW, Gary.

The carrier is the Shoho model from Axis and Allies War at Sea, an idea I borrowed from Woof who ran a very similar game at Doncaster this year. Most of the USN planes are Trumpeter models which are cheap, with bases from Litko and home-made manoeuvre decks. They are about Ł10 including postage for 5 models, which I think is the cheapest plane on the market. Aim are certainly better but the postage from the US is crippling. Link to my thread is here: https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...ight=trumpeter

    Thanks for the info, Gary.
I have plenty of Wildcats, Dauntless, Devastators, Zeros and Vals (none have made it to the table, yet I have had many of them for 8+ years )
I bought Fighters of the Pacific (including expansions) on Kickstarter, mainly for the Carriers, Cruisers and Destroyers.
They are not 3D but will work for what I want.

Thanks Pete but not as amazed as we were, of course, me and Hobz put it down to our superior piloting skill - even though we knew Gary had rinsed out some of the 0 chits in the D bag !

A brilliant day well organised by Dave (Flash) who deserves all the credit for herding us cats and coming up with some great scenarios to play.

Thanks for sharing Dave. Sad to have missed it all. The WW2 action in the Pacific looks awesome and I like the random start positioning in the WW1 games. Interesting day. Well played all.

Thanks again for the day, well organised by Dave. Thanks to Gary for the sojourn into WW2, worth the long journey

Nice to see the Shoho scenario, l love the explosions! The Devastators definitely did better than at Doncaster. I will have to get down to Entoyment for a game at some point as I'm really not far away.

We'll still claim it was superior piloting !
We're there Wednesday nights, Mark, from 6pm and normally get three WW1 games in along the lines of the 1 hour dogfight. We regularly field 8-10 players and welcome new blood. Rob (Rabscallion) comes to Flight Club when he can and he's from your neck of the woods.

I put it down to the bravery of the defending Japanese pilots. p.s. guess which side I was flying for?
