Thread: Legless Fokker

  1. #1

    Default Legless Fokker

I obtained this Fokker Dr1 from a mate of mine when he was tidying up his collection - it started life as a Nexus WoW all red MvR but something was amiss as you will see.
I decided long ago I wanted to do a repaint to represent Werner Voss' Fokker F.1 103 and this was the only donor I had available so I ploughed on with it.
First I removed the wing tip skids from the lower wings then rounded out the tail a bit...elevators & rudder...

Then I painted the whole thing sky blue bar the tail which was painted white

After that had dried thoroughly I dry brushed the upper sides & fuselage with Humbrol 86 olive green and used the same paint on the cowling.

Once dried I painted the face on the cowling - very fiddly but I hope I caught the essence

and finally I added the decals (Dom's decals), a Peter Pig pilot then sealed & varnished the whole lot.

Of course the more astute of you will have spotted that Werner has sadly lost his undercart, and the reason behind this threads name, which is something I hope to remedy in the not too distant with an addition from a donor Shapeways model, however, should any of you chaps happen to have a spare set of the Dr.1 legs kicking around I would happily take them off your hands and restore them to their proper place.

Other than what's lacking I was quite happy with the model and how it's turned out, the blue really shows through and though I thought to try another technique decided to quit while I was ahead !

    Hope you like it.

As I so resemble a legless Focker I never noticed until the last picture Dave.
    Nice job even sans legs.

    If Tim hasn't, I have.

Those were the days, eh? Repainting original MvR Dr1s with gay abandon. Little did we know then what they were going to fetch on Evilbay.......

Would you consider a paper replacement?

I could recolor the plane image to match yours, and you can print and assemble it to fit your plane.

Looks like I have it covered thanks Mike - if the chaps here are unable to help I'll sacrifice a S/ways model.

We gamed with it in its former guise and no one noticed until the previous owner pointed it out to us !
Easy to miss on a low table I guess.

There was the Ursinus Seaplane, with retractable floats. Too bad the prototype crashed during trials and was not further developed.

On the original topic, you can also build a new undercarriage out of styrene rods and such, if you have a hand for such things.

I could but my skills aren't that good and as my old man used to say 'don't spoil the ship for a ha'p'orth of tar' !
An original replacement is the ideal, a S/way replacement is a compromise, anything else won't do it justice in my eyes. If I hadn't sent my only Ares version in for a LL comp prize it would already have been done !

Many thanks for the offer Dave - I await a response from Tim but it sounds like Steve may have it covered if he doesn't, so the elves can stand easy.

Sorry to report I can't locate my damaged Dr.1 (actually at least two of 'em, but they're hiding!).

Hopefully Steve can supply the necessary.
