    Default OTT-FYM Mission 3 - Bloody April - 19th April 1917 by Hu Rhu

As they headed towards the lines, 2Lt Dennis Giles leaned out of the cockpit of his Sopwith Triplane and looked right. He could see the rest of his group in a rough formation with the other scout, a silver Nieuport 17, flown by 2Lt James Welsh leading the two-seaters. To his left was a green RE8 with a red stripe, flown by 2Lt Ernest Capon with his observer AM3 Percy Lindup, who gave him a cheery wave. Giles waved back reassured that Lindup, who was known to be an avid checker of his ammunition, was observant. Beyond him was Lt Fraser Norris flying a linen doped BE2c, with his observer AM3 Reginald Lipton. Giles signalled to them to test their guns and was reassured to see his own was firing properly.

Despite their mounting losses, the Bulldogs had been given the task of escorting a photo reconnaissance mission just beyond the lines. They were following another group who had set out earlier. Once they had completed their mission they were due to rendezvous and help escort the other group home, since their target had been deeper into enemy territory. This group had already lost one of its number to AA fire and now consisted of an RE8 flown by Lt Frederick Laing and his observer AM3 Edward Selby and escorted by 2Lt Arnold Arnold in a yellow SPAD VII and a rookie pilot 2Lt Gray, loaned to the squadron due to its current losses.

As they crossed their own lines, Giles signalled to them to test their guns and was reassured to see his own was firing properly. He then turned his attention to the enemy lines and sure enough he could make out 4 enemy aircraft ahead of them and heading their way. A kette from the Adlers all flying the latest Albatros D.III, was heading their way, led by the Staffelfeuhrer – Obltn Karl Ziegler in a white tailed aircraft. To his right was Ltn Karl-Heinz Fischer in his pale blue machine, whilst to his right was Ltn Johannes Kleine in his dark blue Albatros and finally, Ltn Helmut von Bauer in his black tailed machine.

What Giles couldn’t see were two more Albatros D.IIIs from Jasta 11 piloted by none other than Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen and Ltn Werner Voss, who were on an intercept course with the returning flight.

MvR opens fire on the RE8 and suffers the ignominy of missing and for a moment his guns seem to jam but clear themselves immediately. In return he takes damage from Laing and a bullet hits his chest but is deflected by his cigarette case. (Lucky Pilot discards the wound and the sniper skill prevents his gun jamming – Alt card not shown on photo). Arnold fires on MvR but misses and Voss shoots at Arnold, and also misses. The initial exchanges produce precisely no damage.

Over in No Man’s Land the Adlers double up on their scout opponents. Ziegler and Fischer both fire at Giles and both miss, whilst Giles scores minor damage on the pale blue Albatros.
Welsh fires at von Bauer and wounds him but takes heavy damage in return with Kleine adding to Welsh’s misery.

To the East, MvR hits Gray’s Nieuport hard, whilst Voss scores heavily on the RE8 and sets it on fire. Laing returns fire and there is a moment when flames seem to flicker around the Albatros but they immediately go out and it just starts to smoke. (Lucky Pilot discards the flame damage).

Well done gentlemen, the cost is high but you've stopped the Englanders mission by downing their recon birds and effectively blinding them. That's a victory in my book in spite of our casualties in men and machines. We have victories of our own to celebrate tonight

    On t'other side:
AM.3 Percy Lindup is awarded the Military Medal (MM) for his victories today and combat service to date for King and country

2Lt Willam Gray didn't make it back to his parent squadron having been collared by Uncle & the CO to remain with the Bulldogs for now.

A hard fought battle, Gary. Seems MvR had a similar impact as other games. Nice that Lindup survived given his performance in this mission takin out both Jasta 11 planes.

"Bulldog win on points but it doesn't feel like they won!" - Jasta 11 might have some views on that.

    Cheers

    Excellent AAR Gary.
I was worried that Lindup would roll poorly in the C&W/E&E after taking down both "Famous Aces" but he will only miss a few sorties.

With only AM3 Selby lost the Bulldogs came out in fairly good shape.

So far my dreaded 'Bloody April' scenario has not gone very well for the Adlers, despite all the premonitions from 'tother side

Nice fight Gary. Well played. The Bulldogs didn't look like they deserved the victory, but as one myself I'll take that result

One point of order - maybe I played it incorrectly, but I thought MvR and his wingman, were required to leave the mission if MvR had to use his Lucky Pilot skill. Following the 3PW from the B deck he received early, the one that bounced off his cigarette case, I expected the two of them to just keep going and fly off the table. Did I get this wrong?

Either way, it was a very entertaining fight and nicely presented. Thanks for the entertainment

I misread the BRF where it says that he has to retire after using the Lucky Pilot trait. Instead I read the last line of the BRF which reads " *MvR is immune to being shot down. If he somehow manages to use his “Lucky Pilot” and then takes some other catastrophic hit he will be considered to have spun away and exited the mat."

I rather assumed that given like any other pilot he would fly until some other factor (wounded, engine damage, aircraft damage etc) would force him off the table. As it was he was returning home having used his lucky pilot skill and then took engine damaged but had not yet left the table when he engaged the other aircraft. The two wounds then caused him to exit the table.

No mea culpa on your part, Gary. In other commentary, it appears Pete was of two minds on this....perhaps more, but that's speculation. In one mind, MvR was to leave the table after using his "lucky git" skill, but if for some reason he suffered a catastrophic hit before actually exiting then the being "immune to being shot down" would come into play. In the other mind, MvR would use the "lucky git" skill, hang around but if suffering a subsequent catastrophic hit would then "leave the table" at once. As far as I'm concerned you played it just fine....and it seems Uncle agrees but maybe Uncle is just tired and therefore a wee bit more agreeable.

That was the intent. MvR does not have to leave when he uses his Lucky Pilot skill, but escapes unscathed if a subsequent situation would have taken him down.

Whatever, guys. The missions are there for our enjoyment, so however they are interpreted, I think its ok. I was really only concerned that I had messed up, again

It seems that inadvertently I played to the spirit rather than the letter of the mission. Either way it is what it is and the additional time that MvR spent on the board didn't materially affect the scores or the outcome.

I enjoyed the game but would prefer having less aircraft on the table as it is quite time consuming and there is the risk of inadvertently missing something important, not to mention the extra photos to upload. This is not a critiscism since the mission itself (and the previous one) was enjoyable, but just a note to perhaps influence future missions.
