Thread: BE2c vs a pair of Fokkers

Default BE2c vs a pair of Fokkers

This scenario is not original, but was inspired by similar AARs, the authors of which I am indebted.

    The planes...

The BE2c. Armed with a single Lewis machine gun, the observer could fire forward at oblique angle to starboard or port. The gun could be removed from the front mounts and placed onto the rear Strange mount which allowed a wide firing arc.

The Fokker EI, initially an armed two-seat M5 observation plane, this type had an 80hp engine and a forward firing, synchronized machine gun. As later types reached front line units, this plane filled the role of a trainer, giving new pilots orientation to the speedy, maneuverable Fokker monoplanes.

The Fokker EII. As the EIII replaced this type in front line units, some EIIs were also repurposed as training aircraft. Its 100 hp engine gave it a bit more speed than the EI.

MY game partner, Janet, is managing the BEE. She is allowed to use its mg on either front "candlestick" mount, or on the rear Strange mount. Changing the Lewis to a different mount will require two maneuver phases. The BEE is using the XB deck. To give the BEE a fighting chance, we gave it the Lucky Pilot card and the Bullet Checker.

I am managing the Fokkers. Both use the XD deck, however the EI must play a stall card in each 3-maneuver turn due to its less powerful engine and the weight of two crew members. Since the Fokker pilots are inexperienced, they both are given the Rookie Pilot card

The mission: the BEE is to enter the game mat from the lower left corner, fly over the railway station, then return to the lower left corner. If the BEE makes if off the game mat there, the mission is deemed a success.

    The set up....

The initial moves. These are slow planes. It takes a while to cover any distance.

The BEE and the EII close and exchange fire. The BEE's bullets cause no damage to the Fokker. The Fokker's fire inflicts minor damage; its gun jams. Being a rookie pilot, he will take four maneuvers to clear his mg.

The EII catches the BEE and delivers a devastating rat-tat-tat!! Janet and I quickly make the decision that the BOOM card will have one half value, in the interest in keeping the BEE alive a bit longer.

But to no avail. The EI catches up, and the two Fokkers deliver the coop dee grass

    BUT WAIT!!
We just remembered the Lucky Pilot card!!
We re-set the planes as they were positioned when the BOOM card was drawn. The game goes on!! The BEE is just inches from the corner of the mat!

Nice AAR. Great to see alternative early war aircraft variations in play.
See you on the Dark Side......

    Larry, nice AAR.

Go to Edit, then Advanced Edit. Scroll down to the bottom of the Advanced Edit page, and you should see a blue box with Manage Attachments.

Clicking on this should open a window showing a few boxes, for all your images recently uploaded, with a box at the bottom showing the attachments/images in the current thread. You can select and delete individual images from the current thread by clicking on the thumbnail, and then clicking on the tiny "x" at the top right of the thumbnail.

    Hope that helps.

You can upload images and insert them using this Manage Attachment window at any time. Please note: position your cursor at the point of insertion before clicking on the Manage Attachments box to insert at that specific place. Otherwise, you can cut and paste the code in the edit window afterwards.

Enjoyable AAR. I know the BEE is a paper model. Are the Fokkers also? They all look great.

The Fokkers are Valom E.IIIs slightly modified. I like how the E.I turned out. I extended the cockpit and dirtied up the finish to give it a worn look.

Thanks for the help, Mike. Eventually I got it right!

    Interesting matchup, Larry.
It would be tough for the BE.2 to win that one.
The Lucky Pilot almost got him home.

    Thanks for posting.

Larry - really nice job with the worn finish on the Fokkers. They look like battle-hardened fighters

Love it. We are doing a similar scenario tonight to blood my Be2's.

Nicely done, Larry, for a minute there I thought the BEE was going to give you the slip but no such luck !

Yes, and it looks like the BEE's crew was carboneezay, as the French put it. Or they were lucky and avoided serious injury, then had lunch with the Kaiser in Potsdam!

Tough outing for the BE. Such a tease too. Ouch with a Boom even at half. Then, "OH, lucky pilot so no Boom". Then the firey finale on the board's edge. Great stuff!
