I was just wondering if anyone remebers that about 20 years ago there was a game out going by the same name its was very close to the idea and theme of the current game but one of a much more massive size. let me discribe it to you.

The rules were typed with very little in the way of illistrations. You had to build your own base and (if i remember correctly) use 1/72th scale models. the stand was trianglar in shape with 3 wheels. 2 were straight and imoble while the 3rd at the back could be move back and forth. the 3rd wheel also had a dial which showed the angle the wheel was positioned at. A 5 ft peice of dowel was then attached to the base which had several altitute marks on it. You then attached your plane to a clip and positioned it on the pole. You needed a full garage or a gym to play in due to the scale. the rules had stats for each plane which told you the max angle you could turn at. The max speed you could move at, damage you put out ect ect.

I was actually searching for this set of rules when i discovered the current wings of war.

I think you're misremembering the title, as that sure as heck sounds like "Fighter Pilot" by John McEwan, aka that nice man at Reviresco....

Pre-dating Fighter Pilot was Mustangs & Messerschmitts, by Rocky Russo. Published by McEwan Miniatures, John's company before Reviresco. He also produced a WWI version called Triplane.

Russo split with McEwan and took M&M with him, to Falcon Games and now his own in-house publishing. Doing Triplane and Mig Alley and (IIRC) Condor Legion.

Fighter Pilot is WWI through 80's modern.

Actually it might have been Mustangs & Messerschmitts it was quite a while ago, around 1985-86, at the time it was realy hard for us to find space to play in. Lost the rules in a move but i still have the stand and the models. Although looking at them now they have a realy bad paint job.

I think it was Mustangs and Messerschmitts.

I saw a game in progress at one of the local game shops here in Columbus once, and it was awsome looking. 5' dow rods on wheels with F4F Wildcats attached, intercepting a flight of Japanese Betty's with a Zero escort, and it did take up an entire game room/hall at the shop!

The 1/72 scale planes were something to see, although the dow rods on wheels seemed to dwarf the 1/72 scale planes and kinda spoiled the visual aspect somewhat. Still, it was impressive to watch and see.

I have enjoyed both games and still have quite a few airplanes, and some un-built to be done soon (I hope). Needs a fair amount of space, which is hard to find. I have several Mustangs at the front of the que, as I am 51 now, thought it was appropiate.

There was another game series that was also similar but used planes of a small scale. The "Blue Sky" series, Blue Sky/White Star, Blue Sky/Black Cross. I have of the books and a plane kicking around here somewhere. It was fun fast and easy. It was done in conjunction with Simtac (or part of Simtac) and they had tons of planes. Due to the small scale, they even had B-17's, etc. I played the game at Origins oh so many years ago.

Very different mechanics for Blue Skies - hex-based and far less detailed, more geared towards playing a squadron or two each rather than a plane or two each in things like M&M. I still play Blue Skies regularly - great system....
