What Sven said.
Ah ha!
Now I have seen the real "Boaty boys." Pete.
Chris must have been talking about them! ;) and I also see that Tim weathered the storm without having to resort to the Dried Frog Pills. His therapy is having some good results. When he comes over for Origins next year he may even be able to walk past a table with ships that have sails without having a relapse.:hmm::slysmile:
Rob.
Great photos Peter. Looks like a great time was had by all. Good to see that collisions are not limited to planes :lol:
Nice to see seaplanes in action. The British Felixstowe really dominates the table. Any idea what the small grey US Navy biplane is?
Even if everything is not back to the way it used to be, it's nice to see that life is going on again after this Pandemic, this Origins Game Fair seems to be a perfect success !
Thank you Peter also for publishing this game with these French Warbirds sometimes too rare on the gaming tables
More great pics! That seaplane game looks like a blast :p
And also the French :D
Game 4, Saturday noon, "Hunting Martians". This scenario is an attack on a Martian landing zone. The earthlings are out to destroy the Martian base. One large round Martian base surrounded with four terrain pieces that could trip up the Tripods.
After a couple of moves into the game the Martians have spread out around their base. The incoming planes jocky around to try to get in shots at the unshielded sides.
Attachment 307500
A cannon armed SPAD XII takes a shot but comes up empty. This beautiful SPAD that I just bought off of Clipper had the worst luck, I may have to return it. You've never seen so many zeros shot from a cannon!
Attachment 307501
I had to keep in line with the game's title and have a Triplane on the board.
Attachment 307502
Even after being strongly warned to stay away from the terrain, a Martian had to find out for himself. He was lucky no plane was in position to shoot him while the shields were down.
Attachment 307503
The poor SPAD XII now has engine damage and is delayed getting back into the fight by constantly stalling.
Attachment 307504
One Martian needs a larger recharge that he gets from his base while the attacking planes are elsewhere.
Attachment 307505
The Martians are circling the wagons around their base. One rocket armed N16 was destroyed in the process of releasing it's rockets at the base. A close call for the Martians. The N16 will be back. (respawned at the top of the photo you can only see the base)
Attachment 307506
Another N16 gets in close to the Martian gathering.
Attachment 307507
Attachment 307508
Swirling planes and dancing Martians, more like a game of Twister!
Attachment 307509
Attachment 307510
Third time's a charm. The N16's 3rd attempt at attacking the base finally succeeds! One rocket hits home but the other misses the base completely but serious damage has been done.
Attachment 307511
One Martian is finally destroyed along with the base! Earth claims a victory in this encounter but there are still more Martians to hunt down.
Attachment 307512
Game 5, Saturday 4pm, "If it floats it will be attacked", should have been called, "If it floats it will be ignored". Here we have an Italian raid on an Austrian island installation. When the Italians arrive they find an unexpected Austrian gunboat nestled between the islands. The gunboat belongs to Karl which he got from Neil (Skafloc).
Familiar masks join in antoher game of Wings.
Attachment 307513
Ah-ha! A gunboat is spotted! Decisions-decisions, keep to the plan of attacking the facilities or sink the gunboat? (My lead into the scenario already spoiled this attempt at adding tension to the fight didn't it?)
Attachment 307517
Opposing planes position themselves for the imminent fight.
Attachment 307516
Support from the gunboat boosters the Austrian morale.
Attachment 307515
The small Austrian fighters aren't sure how they are going to tackle the large Capronis.
Attachment 307514
Attachment 307518
This Austrian caom doen't work so well over the water. The Caproni tail gunner hits an oil line and ugly black smoke trails the Albatros.
Attachment 307519
Another Ausrtian gets a critical hit on it's engine, cursing it for the rest of the battle.
Attachment 307521
More bad news for the Austrians as a flying boat bursts into flames.
Attachment 307522
OH NO! Another Austrian sporting flames! The Italians are having their way with the Austrians.
Attachment 307523
The yellow Caproni skirts the gunboat after taking some serious hits from it. The pilot lines up one of the installations for a bomb drop.
Attachment 307524
The chaos of war. Or is it just the child in us, "My turn to move"!
Attachment 307525
The action moves to over the island.
Attachment 307526
Overall the battle was quite tame. There was little shooting or the usual destruction mayhem. The Italians may have been distracted by the unexpected gunboat and did minimal damage to the installations. The Austrians cheered as the Italians turned for home without accomplishing their mission.
The final game, game 6, Sunday 9am. A French CAP patrol engages a German flight of Stukas intent on attacking the fortified artillery positions on the Marfee Heights behind Sedan. A fierce fight follows when a flight of Bf 109s join in.
Being Sunday morning we were correct in not expecting much of a turnout. I had 3 players while Jim's WGF game drew the same. Jim's game started an hour later at 10. He started off flying in my game so I'd have 4 pilots but left when his game started. I took over pushing the planes he had started with. French pilots flew a D.520 and a MS.406 while the Germans flew 2 109s and 2 Stukas with 2 bombs each. There were 8 fortified artillery positions that the Germans were out to destroy.
The bad guys.
Attachment 307527
Attachment 307528
The good guys.
Attachment 307529
Attachment 307530
A Morane slips under the 109 and smokes a Stuka.
Attachment 307531
One of the Moranes doesn't react well to being hit by a 109's cannons.
Attachment 307532
A pair of 109s get behind the French.
Attachment 307533
One Stuka is downed moments before it would have began it's terrifying dive. The occupants of the fortified gun position cheer to their comrade in the sky.
Attachment 307534
The conga line forms. Two French fighters get behind a Stuka with a 109 behind the French.
Attachment 307535
The Stuka desperately tries to shake the Morane 406 as it lines up it's target. One Morane turns off and the 109 keeps on target trying to protect the Stuka.
Attachment 307536
Attachment 307537
An unopposed Stuka begins it's dive approach.
Attachment 307538
One D520 is downed, evening the kills, but so far no targets have been hit.
Attachment 307539
A 406 see it's end. The Germans are getting the upper hand in the air and an artillery post is damaged below a diving Stuka.
Attachment 307540
Attachment 307541
Attachment 307542
One position is destroyed while the fighters look around for targets.
Attachment 307543
Attachment 307544
Attachment 307545
With it's bombs dropped the Stukas turn for home. The 109s form a screen to keep the French away from the slow Ju87s flight home.
Attachment 307546
If I recall correctly the Germans destroyed 3 positions and damaged 2. In the air the Germans were definitely ahead. It was a draw or slightly in favor of the Germans.
Sadly after this game everything was packed up and goodbyes were exchanged as we all headed for home. The ball is already rolling for nexzt year's Origins. I hope more of you can come and join in. It's undoubtedly one of the best events for Wings and Sails there is.
Wonderful pictures! Thanks for sharing Peter!
All of those terrific pics - where's the selfie? :p
I would just like to thank those members who put on such a splendid series of games in support of our hobby. I know how much time and effort goes into preparing these games let alone running them over several days. :thankyou: No doubt the games masters will be putting the participents forward for the appropriate Origins medals on the usual submissions requests.
Rob.
OK, My PoV of Peter's game 5
Adriatic action:
Italians bombing some island bases, with a surprise gunboat added (built by Neil (Skafloc)
Attachment 307547
Capronis and Hanriots vs. an assortment of A-H scouts.
Attachment 307548
And the action opens.
Attachment 307549
I take a dive, to avoid the incoming fire. Unfortunately, a long shot kills my front gunner.
Attachment 307550
And it works, as most of the action heads to the other side.
Attachment 307551
The gunboats AAA gets me! Half damage for the bomber (12 pts.)
Attachment 307552
All alone, and lined up with the base.
Attachment 307553
A partial hit on the base. Some MG fire from the gunboat, and a passing strafe from a respawning scout leaves me with 1 point of damage left, and a desire for the board edge.
Attachment 307554
Attachment 307555
Great scenarios, as always, Peter.
Interesting mix of planes - nice to see your French especially.
The mats are gorgeous (meant to mention that on your Sails game as well) and I really like the cockpit canopy of the smoking Stuka.
:sAprvd:
P.S. I liked the Martian one as well.
I am hoping to get there next year.Quote:
Next year you have to attend!
It certainly looks like you all had a great time at Origins. Did Ares perchance have a stall there and. if so, were you able to extract any news from them?
They had a booth, and staff running games in the area, but I didn't have a chance to ask. There was an extra level of confusion (from GAMA mostly), and the heads were sorting things out.
Jim may have gotten something, though he didn't tell us. From past experience, the Ares USA head knows little more than we do here.
Karl
They said that there is work on the balloons rerelease but there was no date.
The version I heard last time it came up on the side when I was discussing other work I do for them--and remember, this is my personal recollection NOT an official announcement--is that IIRC this time we only get the balloons and maybe some "paper" accessories like AA-gun cards, no nice neat "Solitaire Game in a Box" like original Balloon Busters was.
Things have been crazy busy for me since I've gotten back. I apologize but I'm going to just post a lot of pictures for all to enjoy. i did get some fun pictures of participants.

Awesome pictures from everyone!!!
Great photos, thanks!
Thanks again Peter for these new pictures and the sharing of this event
I took the liberty to make an information link on the forum le CIRQUE VOLANT : https://wingsofwar.1fr1.net/t3113-or...game-2020-2021
Where the French players will surely be delighted to see French Warbirds in the US sky :)

Thank you for posting all those great pictures. It is truly good to see so many folk having fun in all of the Ares games. Loved all the maps and planes and I particularly liked the Austrian gunboat. Well done you guys. :drinks:
Nice photos Phil, thanks for adding them to the thread.
Super photos; thanks for sharing.
Nice games, i specialy enjoyed those with ww2 french aircrafts which are nicely painted.
